My son left college in Feb. suddenly for medical reasons. At the time he left, he was told no one needed his room and he could leave his stuff there until we could come back to get it. Well, we went there today(it's a 2 1/2hr ride) and when he unlocked his room, his laptop was missing. I know he left it there because I was with him when he left and I saw him lock the door and double check it. He had his keys at home with him so I know no one else had them. My question is will this be covered by my homeowners ins? I have put a call into my agent but she is out of the office right now. Hoping to hear some good news.

I don't know the answer but you may want to ask your agent if it would even be worth it to file a claim. Sometimes, it does more harm than good-higher rates in the long run.

How much was it worth?

You may need to file a report with the campus police if your son was the only one who had keys to his room. Are you certain no friends had spare keys? Did someone else have access to the room?

Good luck.

If your son was considered a resident of your household while he was at college, it's probably covered. but there may be a monetary limitation on how much coverage you have for electronics.

Just got off the phone with my agent. Since he lived in the dorm, he is covered! The claim is subject to $500 deductable but since I have the receipts and the box for it she said they would accept the claim quickly. The computer was $2000 so it is worth more than the deductable. We did file a report with the police and also to the head of the school. There are no spare keys for the room. The keys are tech keys and not something that can be duplicated. Since there was no damage to the door or the lock and since the door was locked when we got there today(it was bolted which has to be done with a key) it was unfortunately most likely an inside job.

sorry for that unfortunate incident
at least you'll get most of the money back
