FCAT tests skills that the children should have mastered. From what I have seen it tests skills that students will need in the future such as basic math concepts, writing skills and reading comprehension skills. Nothing more than what I had to take as a kid just in a bit different form. It is time that schools go back to standards that need to be accomplished before passing to the next grade. Once they hit the real world no one will give them a job just because they don't want to hurt someone's feelings. They want basic skills.
I know that FCAT is very hard for the deaf children because their language skills lag behind hearing children due to a lack of early communication skills and lack of aquistion of language until they hit school for the most part. We work very hard to get them up to speed.
Just remember, if they can't pass FCAT they will not get a regular diploma. They can only get a special diploma or certiifcate of attendence.
Btw my oldest was in the last group that didn't take the FCAT but had to take the older test which was worse.
