My iron level was 216 and my chol also jumped from my usual 182 to 212 (I get blood work every 8 weeks due to psoriatic arthritis and the meds i'm on). I've had high iron twice before but i didn't save that blood test. The last two my iron wasn't tested. This script my dr gave me i guess included it. I emailed my rheum and after making sure i'm not on any supplements containing iron he just said let's see what it is next time. I've read about a hereditary condition causing high iron, but to my knowledge no one in the family has had this. Just curious if anyone has had this with a cause that wasn't hereditary. Thanks.

I've had low iron levels, which can make you have zero energy. I take iron tablets and feel great. High iron can be fatal if its to much. But that does not sound like something you would get from a regular diet. I guess you are watching your diet and are trying not to eat things that are high in iron?

A friend of mine has this condition--pheochromocytis. No one else in his family has it but he did hear that it was "genetic." He has to go get "bled" occasionally, otherwise the excess iron is very hard on his body/organs.

Could you be dehydrated? If it was a chronic problem you'd have noticed before you were an adult I imagine. Have you had any med changes? Had your kidneys, liver, thyroid bloodwork done?

My sister. My grandma also had a blood disorder.

She has had to cross foods off her list with high iron levels, like broccoli.

I don't think I was dehydrated, but not sure. Interesting thing about the genetic issue is it often shows up in middle age. I'm 45. All other blood work was ok.

Yeah, the treatment doesn't sound fun.

My ex husbands cousin's husband has a condition that causes very high iron levels. Before it was diagnosed it actually caused organ damage and he had major heart issues in his 20s. Now he had to get "bled" on a regular basis. Basically it's as if he's donating blood. I would get it checked out and not eat any high iron foods just to be safe.

I'm not a big red meat eater. I eat eggs about 3x a week because i am b12 deficient. I'd probably NEVER eat red meat if i lived alone.

Only drink bottled water, but i do use tap water to boil pasta, rice, etc. You'd think you'd needA LOT of it though for this to happen...hmmm

Hemachromotosis. It's nothing to mess with because as you said, it can cause serious problems.

You mean "hemochromatosis". An inherited disease in which too much iron builds up in the body.

My mom has this. Her mother and brother had it. One or two of my cousins has it also. It is very hard on your body, however you can take steps to reduce it's affect. As a PP said, you can be "bled' every so often which helps. You can also watch your diet which helps. I have been tested and I do not have this disease, nor am I a carrier. An onocologist can help with the treatment.
