Sorry just panicking....my hubby works as a caretaker in the Toronto District school board and they walked away from the bargaining table. This is the third time in about 7 or 8 years they have gone on strike...well they aren't on strike yet but when no one is talking how do you solve anything.

My hubby doesn't want to strike and I know most unioinized employees don't want to strike but they have to follow what the union says.

However if he goes on strike that might mean the end of my disney dreams for this year as well as dipping into the line of credit just to survive.

I also feel really bad for the kids and the parents, if the schools close then the have to pay more for daycare and that isn't fair.

Sorry this is just my vent for the day and wondering if there was anyone out there in the same boat as me.

Not in the same boat ... but just wanted to say that I hope it all works out for them. No one ever wins in a strike situation.

Not in the same boat but do have friends that are and they don't want to strike either. Esp. as it wasn't that long ago for the last strike. Hopefully it will settle soon.

My sister is in exactly the same boat as you! Her husband is a caretaker with the TDSB and they were planning a trip for this summer. I really hope they get back to the bargaining table.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts.

I hope they just don't strike....no one wins

You have to make your choice.
They took a strike vote and the majority of the membership gave the people negotiating the right to call a strke. The union is following what the MEMBERS want, not the other way around. They suggest they want a strike mandate at the vote, but it is ultimately the members who do vote.
If you choose not to go along with your union's call on this, then you cross the picket line. Lets face it that if you don't give your union the strike mandate your bargaining power is greatly reduced.
My father lived through many long (Year plus) strikes, and you don't win so you make your own choice as to what you can live with. Hopefully it works out for you but Disney holidays are really low on a list of priorities as opposed to eating and losing your home. Luckily you have a source to assist you if that occurs.

Cheers,
Grumbo
