Any DVCers live at HHI or Bluffon?

Out of 70k DVCers I figure we can't be the only ones living on HHI. Anyone else live around here?

LOL yall are considering moving here and we are considering moving away in 5-7 years.

Hilton Head is an area we are thinking about for retirement. In some ways it seems as busy as the NY suburbs we'd be leaving. In others it seems very close to nature. We've stayed at DVC HHI three times and will return next spring.

Curious about what you like and dislike about HHI if you'd like to share. Every time we vacation there we like it more, but we are concerned with overdevelopment.

Well, at this point you really don't have to worry about much more development. The island bought much of the empty land left and will not allow anything to be put on it.

Likes,
(1) It doesn't get to awful cold in the winter.
(2) Much of my family is here.
(3) Parking lots have trees in them.
(4) Lots of fine resturants.

Dislikes,
(1) BUGS. mosquitos, sand gnats, palmetto bugs. (If you move here be sure to have the bug man come at least once a month)
(2) Traffic. You have to keep in mind there is just the one main road going onto and off of the island. It can take an hour or two to get off of the island on the afternoon.
(3) Drivers that travel 35mph in the 45mph section. No offense..
(4) Prices. Things tend to cost more around here. Though if you are from NYC things are probable much cheaper here.
(5) Humidity. Makes that hot a lot worse.
(6) Gas prices. Oh wait. That is nation wide...

Well I guess I could sum it up like this. I like living here because it isn't like most other places. I mean our walmart parking lot has trees growing between every row. I don't like living here because it is a little overcrowded in my opinion.

However, Bluffton is growing up a bit and taking some of the load.

One thing you have to consider if the things you like about it here while you visit may get boring pretty quick after living here.

I actually would like to retire to HH. I think I have a pretty good idea of what it is like since my grandparents did retire there and I spent a LOT of time with them. Traffic is an issue, but the nice thing about being retired is you are not going any place in a hurry (see the 35 mph drivers LOL!). And since you have been there for a while you may remember as I do the old two lane bridge and winding back road to Savannah. I think things have improved in that area.

That said I am not a fan of the DVC location at HH. I want to be inside a plantation within walking distance to the beach.

I do not live there, but my parents have lived there for several years and we go there all the time to visit (free vacation!). The traffic has increased very noticeably over the last decade, but once you are in the plantations it does not seem very crowded.

This thread is such a hoot. My DH and I were talking on our last trip to HHI that we would love to retire there.

Ok, guys. you want to know about the traffic.

They are currently in the process of taking that 4 lane road and turning it into a 6 lane road.

That should lighten things up a bit.

Although once you are actually on Hilton Head the traffic isn't that bad. It is more just getting on and off of the island that is a big problem.

Thanks for some very interesting thoughts.
Hard to imagine having the bug man come every month... THat must be a fairly significant expense.

On the other hand after NYC and Long Island traffic, I doubt that HHI would be too bad. I have observed a long back-up leaving the island in the afternoon, but fortunately we were going the other way. And just trying to get off Long Island during rush hour is tackling the near impossible.

Compared to NYC traffic we don't have any traffic at all. LOL

On a trip to New Lebenon, NY a few months ago we had to drive through NYC. My wife wanted to actually say she had been through NYC so on the way back we took the FDR along side Manhatton (spelling I am sure). Anyway you people will turn a 6 ln hwy into an 8 or 10 lane. Those white lines in the road seem to be meaningless. LOL
