Any docs/nurses out there? DD's lip looks bruised...

but she didn't injure it. It almost looks like a grape-koolaid moustache, but she doesn't drink koolaid.

The school nurse looked at it today, and told me to keep an eye on it.

For what??

I'm nervous. (I'm always nervous)

What could be indicated by this? Anything serious? I just need some possiblities so I can stop worrying about it.

TIA!

Minnie

Sounds like a bruise?? How old is she? Could she maybe have been playing with a cup; you know, sucking all of the air out of it, so that the cup "sticks" to around her mouth, resulting in a hickey-type bruise?

Other than that, I don't know...?

Hope you find out something.

Jo

My daughter did that to herself with a cup when she was 4. We took her to the Pediatrician, and everyone was mystified. They even called in a few other doctors to look at it, and one finally figured it out. My DD had sucked a cup so it stuck to her face, and she had broken blood vessels all around her mouth.

Yup, my DD did that too. Except she wasn't 4, she's 13!!!:sad2:
What a goofball. We laughed at her for at least a week before it went away! :lmao:

Her friends had a good time with it too!:rotfl2:

DD did that when she was younger drinking from a water bottle (soda-type).

I also have a little one at school that bites their upper and lower lip and tend to get more raw and chapped than bruised looking, but that's not to say it couldn't bruise if it was an infrequent thing.

Maybe you could ask the school nurse what it is you should be looking for. (The nurse may mean to watch that it is resolving instead of getting worse). If you feel nervous about it, you could give the dr a call, describe it and see what the dr thinks. Grammy

My 6 year old just did this last night. :headache: Luckily school pictures were a couple weeks ago!

I'm willing to bet that's how it happened to your DD.

I yelled at dd, age 12, tonight at dinner for doing the cup sucking thing. She was laughing hysterically until I told her she'd end up with a big bruise all around her mouth or part of it. Of course dh had to add his two cents and tell her she'd have a big hickey around her mouth. Which, in turn, resulted in explaining what a hickey is and the drama that unfolds whenever something about kissing, etc. comes up in front of dd, age 10. "OMG! GROSS! YOu PEOPLE ARE SICK!" Let's just say he needs to eat and not talk at dinner.

OMG. I bet a water bottle would do it, huh? that little stinker. I'll have to ask her tomorrow......

THANKS, everyone! Having had a child with a heart defect, blue lips mean scary things to me. Never thought that it could have just been a self-inflicted HICKEY - LOL!

Toothbrush holders with suction cups (so they can stick to the mirror) will also make pretty nifty hickeys. Ds scared me half to death with a red circle of broken blood vessels on his forehead last year. I figured it out when I saw the other three kids come running around the corner quacking with little ducky toothbrush holders all stuck on their heads!:rotfl2:

you do mean the purple/red bruise color, right? Not a bluish tint?

Well, it's blue. Dark blue, though, not slushie blue. Blue/dark purple. Not reddish AT ALL.

That's why I'm worried! (and now, you've got me worried again - LOL!) So please elaborate!!!

(thinking I'm headed to the pedi tomorrow with her!)

With a heart defect, I wouldn't mess around--I'd go to the pedi anyway. Then he can (hopefully) tell you it's a bottle mark!

If you are worried about that, check her fingernails to see if they are bluish too.

She said it was above the lip like a moustache. Low oxygen would make both lips blue not a mustache ABOVE the lip.

well, I didn't mean to scare. You can tell what a bruise looks like. trust your gut. circumoral cyanosis is a bluish tint around the mouth. it would look different than just a bruise.
oh, i just saw the post where you said your child had a heart defect, so you know what blue lips look like.sorry, sorry. did not mean to work you up .

It's my other DD that had a heart defect (atrial septal defect). This one's always been healthy. But goofy.

I'm still worried!

For peace of mind, call your Ped. They can put you at ease.

Then next week you can move on to worrying about something else...at least, that's what I do!;)
