I'm perplexed about something that has happened to my teeth recently.
First off, I *think* I have good dental health. 39 y/o, no cavities (yet), floss regularly, and visit the dentist every 6 months for cleaning/exam.
The last time two times I've been to the dentist, the hygenist says to me "oh, you must be a tea drinker, I see tea stains on the back of your bottom/front teeth." She also told me not to worry, that no one else but her and the dentist could see them. She proceeded to clean them (scrape method) and all was well. Six months later, I went back in, had a new hygenist. She says: "I'm going to use the sonic water cleaning method on your teeth--it works really well for tea stains." I said sure. Now, I didn't particularly like this type of cleaning. My lower teeth especially were sensitive for 10 days after the cleaning. By the way, during all this, I myself HAVE NEVER SEEN THE TEA STAINS.
About 2 months after the last cleaning I started to notice that my bottom/front teeth looked funny, almost like they had more spaces between them. Same with one of my front teeth (the one between the canine and front tooth). It also looked like it had too much space between it. After closer inspection, I realized it wasn't more space, but it was tea stains in between the teeth that are showing up dark. I'm very distressed about this. I've been drinking tea since I was a teenager (about 2 cups a day) and have never had this kind of problem. I cannot figure out why I am "staining" all of a sudden and there is no way I can get this off myself. I've tried "whitening" floss, and have tried to get baking soda in between my teeth, to no avail.
I can't help but think that the sonic cleaning "did something" to my teeth/enamal but that really sounds ludicrous. The only other thing I can think of is that I have recently changed the brand of tea I am drinking. Now, I have changed in the past, and this has never happened. I went from drinking P&G tips and/or Lipton, to the brand that BJs sells.
Any ideas and what should I do?
