Any Coast Guard members?

I have a son who will be a senior in hs this year. He's begun to talk about joining the coast guard. Any tips or thoughts? Coast Guard does not do war duty, correct? What would be the advantages/disadvantages to doing reserve duty. What about going for your college degree first to get into OCS. Thanks if you can be of help.

I don't know much about the Coast Guard, but my "big brother" (not really related but we grew up together) graduated from the Coast Guard last year. He is now stationed off the coast of California and he is going overseas to help back up the marines. Those are his words, not mine. He says that the Coast Guard is very into athletics..he was a starter center on the football team. He said it was tough but really enjoyed the experience.

My BIL is in the Coast Guard Reserves and has been in Kuwait since Febryary 1st. At first they said that it was for three monthes, then 9 months. Now they're saying 18 months!!

Don't get me wrong. I'm all for serving your country, but I think that pulling reservists for 18 months is nuts.
