I did not make any dining reservations for next week (April 30-May 6) simply because I hate being held to something if I am not sure what my plans are going to be. How possible or impossible is it to get into restaurants such as 1900 Park, Tonys, Sci-Fi, etc if I were to just walk up?

You don't have to be "held to something". Just have an ADR for each night and if you can find somewhere you prefer to eat that will seat you without an ADR then just cancel the one you made in advance. I'll bet you would at least be glad one or two of the nights to have something waiting for you!

Its certainly possible. Next week isn't a really heavily booked week (unlike last week) and you may get lucky. Give it a try, the worst they can do is say no.

sometimes you may be surprised but other times you may be left out of eating at a sit down restaurant........how about each morning go to the front of your resort guest services and ask if they can find you something in the time you request.......maybe even ask for a specific restaurant......you never can tell ..have a great vacation

my friend is going next week as well... She booked at 180 days for her family of four... Her parents called her a couple of months ago to say they would be meeting them there for a few days... Two places she tried to add two people were 1900 and Sci-Fi, both for dinner... CM said both were booked solid for tables of six.

There is always a chance that someone won't show up for a ADR causing an openning... But the popular places are always hard to get into...

Maybe you should call and try make just a few ADR at the places you know you would really like to eat and take a chance on the rest.

I have had a better chance of stopping at the hotel concierge desk (in the lobby - guest services or whatever it's called) and asking about dining instead of walking up.

A few trips ago, we wanted to eat dinner out and stopped by on our way to the bus. She looked up several spots, we got a reservation at SciFi for 45 minutes later. Hopped on the bus and went. Got there, they were turning away anyone asking about availability for that evening. *shrug*

Might save yourself some time and hassle to ask at your hotel before heading out. They can see the system there at the desk to see what is open.

Good luck!

It really depends. Last year we had an ADR for WCC on our arrival day for like 8 something at night and thanks to the Texas weather we did not get to WDW until 11:30 pm (we were suppose to get there around 6) DH called up the next morning and got us in for that evening at 5 for 9 people so you could always try that day if you want. I also know that HS had a sign at one of the information booths that had what places had ADRs available for that day. If you are at a park and want to try that you always could. I would just advise you to be flexible or ready to eat CS though.
BTW we went the end of May so April might be a bit better. We did walk up at L'Original (sp?) for lunch about 20 minutes before opening and our party of 9 was one of the first ones seated and by the time we left the restaurant was pretty full. So it is always possible but not always likely.

Rather than traveling all the way to a park or resort in hopes of walking up, make use of your lobby concierge, guest services at the parks and 407-WDW-DINE to see what is available that day. I've called for WCC less than 30 minutes before I wanted to eat dinner and gotten in.

I've been mentioning my mother's attempts to get a reservation for next weekend...she could get nothing on Sunday or Monday prior to 9:30 PM. Eventually she managed to get Jiko but it was far from her first choice. (I am trying to convince the parents they will like Jiko)

If you are not on the dining plan, you might try a restaurant that doesn't accept it. My mother is going to call for Raglan Road, if we don't get it we are going to try Portobello Yacht Club, which doesn't take the dining plan and may be less in demand.
