I do this all the time--get some "brilliant" DVC idea--and become obsessed by it.

My DH is turning 50 this December. Suddenly last Friday it occurs to me: what if he and I went to WDW from Fri Dec 12 (his b-day) to Mon Dec 15. Just us--get a babysitter for the kids for the weekend and their 2 school days. I know it seems completely impractical on some levels, but: we could use DVC points for the stay, SW airfare would be $350 total, and we have APs. Plus, I can't think of anywhere else we would go in mid-December and have any fun without the price being extraorbitant. . .

I started to post here when I got this great idea, but I knew everyone would say: just call MS, so I did. . . .Boo hoo. . . no studios for all 3 nights, not even a 1BR for all 3 nights--the pickings were miserable. I think the best she could do was 1 night at one and the remaining 2 at another, and those weren't even studios. . .

Should I "bother" going on a waitlist? What happened to all you DVCers who don't use weekend points, anyways :confused3 :rotfl2: ?

Of course I should have thorught of this 8 months ago ;) , but this is truly an impulsive idea, so I couldn't have!!! :dance3:

Anyone ever get extremely lucky with something like this??

OMG - I feel sort of terrible - I just booked a 1 bedroom at SSR for 3 nights beginning Dec 12th at 11:00 this morning - I might have gotten the last reservation for those 3 days - WOW . It so happens that my birthday is that weekend also and DH and I have never seen the Christmas decorations :santa: so we thought - what the hey lets do it up big this year.

I would try for the wait list - there is always a chance - Good luck

If corky441 just got the last 1 bdrm at SSR, I think you have a good chance for a waitlist to come through. If you can stand a bit of risk, make a back up reservation somewhere (so you can book the airfare) and waitlist for any resort (all three nights). Bet you'll get it, especially since two of the nights are the more expensive weekend nights.

Good luck!

I'm new at this, but could this work? Use your points to stay at POR or CBR. I think points are about 20 a night, probably higher on weekends. Do you have to pay the $95 to do this? Good luck. My birthday is the week before and I would be soooo thrilled if DH surprised me w/ a Disney trip.

I've have very good luck with wait lists. I'd try it. I just canceled two nights Thanksgiving week. Some relatives were going to join us and then had a change of plans (thankful while I could still cancel without putting points in holding!). I'm sure some lucky wait listed DVC member got those nights!

Let us know how it works out for you!

Depends where you waitlisted. For that time of year, just getting on the waitlist now and including the Sunday night would be a long shot. Maybe not impossible, but difficult.

Going the non-DVC route might work. As long as you aren't in the last four months of your use year. You can't make a non-DVC reservation if you are in the last four months of the use year for that UY.

Yes, you would have to pay a $95 fee to make a reservation at POR or CBR.

For comparison purposes, a studio at SSR would be 51 points for those dates and a 1 bedroom would be 102 points. A standard view room at the CBR or POR or CS would be 76 points plus $95.

Thank you, Everyone, for all of your replies and suggestions--much appreciated :thumbsup2

I just put myself on the waitlist for any available studio for 12/12-12/15.

Now I'm off to send money to SW--I know we can use the funds if this doesn't work out!!

So now I'm somewhere between  and :scared1:

I think for this really to be Wowsie, I have to keep it pretty much a secret. . . that part is going to make me nauseaous too!!!

Thanks again, everyone--I'll let you know what happens!!!

well, I just paid $54 a night to stay at ASSports in December with my AP discount. Maybe you could do that and guarantee your stay.

I got a decent AP rate at POFQ for 12/13 and I am staying studio at SSR 12/14-12/17. I can't afford the Saturday points b/c I am too low on points. I booked the studio 3 months ago and I know pick'ins were thin then.

I would try for an AP rate somewhere as a backup if you really want to go. Good Luck.

Why dont you grab two nights if they are still available and pay cash for the third night. I would also waitlist for that night and hope it comes through. That way you would have all three nights either way.

Good luck.

Cash night might not be available through MS if at all. And if it is available through CRO, the OP may have to move since it will be two separate reservations.

Just to keep you all posted--you were all so helpful with your replies!--I booked an AP rate for the 3 nts at CS, so we'll have somewhere to stay if the waitlist doesn't come through. I'm feeling optimistic, though.

Only downside is it's tough to make ADRs when you have No idea where you might be staying!!! We'll just have to wing it!

I'll post if anything happens with the waitlist!!

Thanks to all of you again!
:thumbsup2

Just wanted to let you know you're not alone with these "crazy" ideas!I just had a brilliant idea yesterday to try and get one more trip out of our APs, which expire 12/6. We have SW credits, so no airfare to pay. Just had to work around my work schedule, granddaughter babysitting schedule, and a few other crucial things and voila!- DH agreed that going from 11/13-11/17 would be great.
Well, I figured surely something will be open--it's the middle of November and a weekend to boot! HA.
So last night there was nothing--nothing!-in studio or 1 BR category anywhere, including OKW or SSR, for all three days, and it seemed too short a time to change resorts. I tried again this morning, thinking we could shift plans one day and I could call out one day at work(SHHHH)
I asked again for 11/13-11-16, because I know things can change overnight, and there was a 1 BR at SSR all three nights! I hate to use points on the weekend on a 1 BR, but there wasn't a studio available anywhere for those three days, so SSR it is!
A 1 BR is great for us anyway since I stay up later than DH. So there you have it--a "free" trip lol. Now, if only we could eat free, too....though I was really pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to make dinner ressies at Jiko, Rainforest Cafe, and Rose and Crown at this late date!

Absolutely go on the waitlist! Funny, but last year on the 21st of Nov (2007) I came up with a brilliant idea--DH and I should go to WDW 11-13DEC (2007). I called and was surprised to find the 11th available. We did the 7 day W-L for the 12th. The W-L came in at T-7 days. Then, we decided to add on 1 more night. I called each day and we got the 13th. We ended up in a 1BR at BWV--we had to change our room on the last night because we were in a different room category, but we were just thrilled to have a room. :)
Good luck with the waitlist!
