Any chance of a comp upgrade at AKL?

Hi Everyone!
We recently received our Exchange Certificates for our deployment to NYC following the tragedy of 9/11. In doing so, we decided to use this unique opportunity to upgrade our stay from a standard view room at CBR to a standard view room at AKL (the budget did not allow for more). Is there any chance that we might get a complimentary upgrade to a pool or savannah view? We did get one at CSR in 2000 by asking at check-in but I don't know if this is common practice at a Deluxe, such as AKL. We will be arriving April 20th and staying 6 nights.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Disney for making this stay at the AKL possible. Their "American Heroes Special Offer" is a wonderful program that is greatly appreciated!

I would say chances are good. There are something like 1200 rooms at the AKL and only 120 or so are standard view. If they have savannah or pool view available, it would only be good business to upgrade you at no cost, if they have the space. Then you'll have a pleasant experience and you might even pay for pool or svannah view your next trip.

By the way, there have been several reports on this board that people have been upgraded without even asking from standard to savannah or pool view,

Bottom line is I think you have a good chance. But don't be crushed if you don't. There are MANY public viewing places around the resort to view the animals, which are probably more roomy than a balcony. DOn't get me wrong, from your own blacony the view is cool - DH wants to go back sooooooo bad, he loved it so much.

No matter what you will anjoy AKL!

Thanks for the info, zulaya! We are really looking forward to this stay at AKL and we won't be disappointed with a standard view since that is what we paid for! We already have PS Ressies for Boma's on the evening we arrive and we are hoping to try dinner at Jiko one evening.
And, "dtuleya", thanks for the encouragement! We are volunteers so we have to enjoy what we do, and, for the most part, we do.

Mike, I just wanted to let you know that we had dinner at Boma, and it was wonderful! Tons of great choices. Don't be afraid to ask one of the cast members if you don't know what something is. Try the pork tenderloin if it's available that night--it's outstanding.

Will do, ead79. About the only time my eating habits become adventurous is when we are at WDW. I tried things at Akershus that I never would have tried at a restaurant around home and I had the buffalo at Le Cellier. There's just something about being at WDW!

We were at AKL on 2/4 and they upgraded us to pool view without us asking. It was great. I know you will love it. Make sure to get your PS arrangements made Boma was jammed when we were there.

Another upgrade recipient here - We were upgraded from Standard view to Savannah view last Nov/Dec.

As a previous poster indicated the number of 'Standard' view rooms is small at AKL and based on the messages posted to this board for several months it sure looks like more upgrades happen at AKL than at any of the other resorts.

I'm still enough of a believer in Disney Magic that I believe they will notice the "American Heroes Special Offer" and do the upgrade without you even saying a word, but it couldn't hurt to ask!

Oh - definitely give The Boma a try - best restaurant I've ever eaten at...

Upgraded from standard to savannah view in Aug 2001. Not upgrades from standard in Dec 2001. Both rooms were exactly the same except for the view. Depends on how busy the hotel is....lots of room choices in August; place was completely full the first week in Dec (Walt's birthday week). -HM
