Looking into Amtrack from NYC to Orlando. Any Amtrack discounts out there??

It doesn't hurt to ask!

It depends on when you are traveling. Amtrak fares are, naturally, highest in summer and around holidays, so try to avoid these periods. However, in celebration of Amtrak's 30th birthday (May 1, 2001) they have a 30% off sale which was just extended through August. This discount is applicable to the trip you want. Also, if you wanted to drive to Lorton, VA. and take the train from there (Auto-Train), kids get 75% off in the same promotion. Finally, regularly check Railsale on Amtrak's website (updated every Monday I think) for some BIG savings (try Philadelphia to Chicago for $32). There's nothing there right now along your route, but it does pay to keep checking.

You have a choice of two direct trains from New York to Orlando, the Silver Star and Silver Meteor. Both have full dining cars, and sleeping cars if you want to go first class. The Silver Palm does not serve the Disney area (a connecting bus is required). Note that if you are taking a taxi from the train station to WDW, the station in Kissimmee is closer.

I hope this helps. Have a great trip.

Thanks for your advice. Of course we are going after the 30 % sale. We are leaving the 3rd week of Sept and returning the first week of October. I will keep checking the sales. I really don't want to fly!
Thanks!

My parents are coming down when I am in Orlando and they are going by amtrak. They got a discount with AAA. I still think it is overpriced, but my mother absolutely will not fly. He paid $546 round trip for 2 adults, leaving 11am from Penn Station on Sept 28, arriving in Orlando 11am the next day on Sat Sept 29. He is leaving Orlando Oct 6th at 12pm and Arriving back home at 9am.

I don't know if you can't fly like my mom, but airfare is ALOT cheaper than going this route. I am paying $360 via delta roundtrip for 2 adults, leaving Fri Sept 28 and coming back Sun Oct 7, into newark.

I just called Amtrak and they are holding 4 seats for my family, I have to decide if this is what we want to do.

I think we did ok- We would be leaving Fri Sept 21at 7PM and getting into Orlando at 4 PM the next day. Then Returning Oct 3 at noon getting into NY at 9:40AM, Oct 4th. With the AAA discount, total cost is $540 for the 4 of us.

I really don't want to fly, I have done it before and the older I get ( I'm 40), the more stressed out I get just thinking about getting on the plane. Plus Air prices just went up.
Right now this is actually cheaper!!

I will be posting a new thread, with questions on Amtrak trains, now I need info!!!!

Thanks !!!!!!!!!:bounce:

I don't like flying either! That sounds like a good price. We have taken the train many times from NY Penn Station to Orlando, so if you need any information, just ask! Last year and coming up soon we are taking the Auto-Train.

We will just be getting the seats, no accomodations, so I hope it will be ok. DH doesn't even want to drive to VA- plus it's more money for the Auto train.

I asked this on another post- can I plug my tv/vcr in on the train. I got one maybe and one yes. I really don't want to drag a tv along if I can't use it.

Anyone know for sure??

Thanks!!:bounce:

We have been doing the AutoTrain every year since 95 and just love it. Yes, it is a little more money but we have our own car and can load it up with all kinds of things. I always call several times and have them check the fares for me. It is amazing that the same van or sleeper can cost x number of dollars on one day and on the next day be 100 or more dollars cheaper. Children also received reduced fares. In the past I have paid 29 each way for them but now my children are considered adults. Dinner, breakfast, and a movie are included in your ticket. The drive isn't bad from DE. After the W.Wilson bridge I take Rt. 1 into Lorton,VA instead of staying on 95. (Less stressful) Any questions just ask.
