I'm curious about the new rules about opening your luggage. Is this everyone's luggage or just random? Did things disappear? SInce you are not allowed to lock your luggage, what happens if it opens and spreads your stuff all over creation? Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Morning - I am going to move this to Transportation so you can get more answers

We used cable ties rather than locks. That way we would know if they had been opened, and it helped to keep the sippers shut. Packed an old pair of wire cutters in the front pocket of the checked bag to remove them. Brought more with us to put on for teh way home.

That is exactly what we did on our recent trip to Ft. Lauderdale. Packed a pair of old scissors in an 'unlocked' (no cable ties) front pocket on one suitcase and used those cable ties on all the other zippers. It worked like a charm. Our luggage was unopened on our trip from ORD to FLL. We did have one peice of luggage, the kids, opened from FLL back to ORD and they put a notice inside it as they say they will and reclosed the zipper with a red cable tie. It was strange why they opend the kids luggage though, we made sure not to put and shoes or anything besides clothes in that bag so we never could figure out why they opened that one. Nothing was removed or stolen however.

I guess we're going to have to get new luggage. Ours are from 1965 and have a combination lock. If you don't lock them the snap closure is old and can come undone and there go our clothes and anything else. Thanks for the help.

angelrose - what about getting one of those nylon straps to buckle around your suitecase? You wouldn't need to lock it - if one of the latches came open the strap would keep it from opening up.

Thanks BriarfoxinWA. That's what my husband said he would do. A lot less expensive than new luggage. LOL I don't know why I didn't think of that. Brain is on vacation I guess.

Our experience with having our bag searched was actually pretty decent. After Disney cruises every other month, our garment bag is disintegrating. Hubby pieces it together with cable ties, and he was very concerned that it wouldn't be properly closed if it were to be searched. Of course, that was the bag that was chosen for a random search on our way home in Jan. We didn't discover that until we claimed it in Chicago, but they had noticed the fact that it didn't close properly and had sealed it really well with airline tape. Everything was put back in neatly and it held together (now if only I could convince hubby that we REALLY need a new one...he is in charge of packing in our household).

I have to laugh looking back on the last time my carry-on was searched. This poor young guy, who looked pretty new, was going through my make up case and came across a "femanine monthly hygeine product" hahahaha, you should have seen him jump. He hurriedly put all the stuff back in the make up bag and stuffed it back into my carry on. Search Over!! I guess all the terrorists need to do is carry weapons that look like ...... The poor guy must not have any sisters, for heaven's sake!
