My reaction would be to make sure I called the doctor first and took some anitbiotics for an ear infection with me on the trip if the doctor prescribed them. Hopefully your son would be fine and wouldn't need them, but follow his doctor's advice.
You wouldn't have to worry whether or not they had the correct medications on board.
I agree, get some from your doc before you leave for the cruise, that way you won't have to worry about it. If you don't need it great, you can use it later, when you get home.
I would also be interested in knowing whether the doctors on the ship can prescribe medications and if those medications are available on the ship. I would think that the drs would be able to prescribe, and most common meds would be available on board, but it would be comforting to know for sure. Not everyone's dr will prescribe antibiotics "just in case" to take along on the ship.
My son developed an ear infection on our cruise. The doctor onboard prescribed amoxicillin. The doctor even called our room several times during the week to see how he was progressing. I was very impressed with the service we received.
My dh developed strep throat while on our first cruise. The ship's dr gave him amoxicilan and it was very cheap. If your child has any medical allergies I would make sure you have access to the propr medication. My pediatrician would never give us a "just in case prescription" for anything so don't be surprised if you ask and they say no.
My dd 18 was sick with what we thought was strep and was given two different antibiotics from the ship Dr. It ended up being Mono so they were of no use. The Dr. was very nice and the cost was not bad.
