What exactly did Barney Rubble do for a living?

At several points throughout the Flintstones's first run, it seemed as if Barney worked with Fred at the quarry — he bowled on the company team and even once held an executive position there — but in other episodes, particularly those where Fred lost Barney his job, his career path was convoluted at best. Mr. Rubble, voiced by Warner Brothers stalwart Mel Blanc, who also provided Dino's bark, collected paychecks for positions ranging from furniture repossessor to travel agent and private investigator.

In specials and installments produced after the original series, Barney was more likely to be portrayed as a colleague of Fred's, but, again, that status was iffy.

Personally, I think Barney was an eccentric multi-billionaire that really didn't need to work for a living, but wanted to be with his friend Fred so that Fred could yell at him periodically.:p But that is just my opinion.:p
