My brother's child plays competitive ball. They had tryouts and 14 kids agreed to play for the team. After their tryouts closed, three of the kids tried out for another team and were extended offers to pay. They accepted the second offer (after already agreeing to the first) and now my brother's child wants to go play with his friends on the other team. What would you do? Let him go? Have him honour his commitment to the first team? We all understand that teenagers (age 14) want to play alongside their friends but shouldn't there be some accountability if you already signed with a team? The departure of the three boys leaves the team three players short going into the season and most tryouts have now closed. So, what would you do?

If it were my son (and I have a 10 yr. old ballplayer), I'd have him honor his committment.

I'd also have DD honor her commitment. I don't believe in playing where you are until something "better" comes along (which is what the other players did). I can understand a kid being disappointed, but we have a lot of adults who should have been taught as children that a commitment means something.

He committed to a TEAM and he should honor that commitment. I would make him stay with the first team. Plus, since 3 kids have left, he will be guaranteed LOTS of playing time so it could end up being a better experience.

I'm surprised the coach of the second team would be able to "steal" members from another team. Is that allowed??

The parents of the other kids should be ashamed of themselves. That just teaches kids that they don't have to honor commitments if something better comes along. My daughter plays competitive futsal and soccer on club teams and we see this type of thing all the time.

Shari, may I ask what 'futsal' is? I've never heard of it?

Oh, and I agree with everything you said. :)

Futsal is like soccer but it is played on a court (like a basketball court) and a smaller, harder ball is used. There is a goalie and 4 people out on the court. It's a very fast game and it's all about foot skills. It's great training for soccer. My daughter loves it. For the past 2 years her team has made it to the finals in California (we live in Massachusetts) so it has been a lot of fun for us.

That sounds really cool, Shari! Glad your daughter's enjoying it and doing so well! :)

My dd and ds both know that when you sign up for a team you are committed to THAT team and all practices until the season is over. The time to change to another team is NEXT year.
