Another weird little FaceBook quirk

My mom called me on Sunday. She wanted to know if ConcK was local. What??? She saw on FaceBook that his cat had died, and she thought he might want the cats my sister is giving away.

I told her he is not local. But HOW did my mother see ConcK's status?

It would seem that since I commented on his status that my comment showed up on my mom's news feed. I am guessing ConcK has his status security set to "Friends of Friends"? Mom said she has things on her news feed all the time from people she doesn't know, but people she does know have left comments.

After that conversation I noticed that my friend Robyn had commented on something from a woman I don't know, and it showed up on my news feed.

Lesson of the day: CHECK YOUR SECURITY SETTINGS!! Your status may show up on someone else's news feed even if you are not friends with them!

Yeah I have my setting quite high... there isn't much on my FB that anybody beyond friends can see.

Heck I don't even have my proper last name on there for security.

I will have to be more careful when I comment on things. Seeing how there is no way to know WHO might read it! I don't usually say mean things about people in response to other people's status, but just in case I am tempted to do so I should remember it is a bad idea! :lmao:

See, THAT is why I've been reluctant to sign up for FB. And I was actually thinking about taking the plunge and signing up this weekend. Maybe I'll just procrastinate longer. :rolleyes1

I honestly consider posting on the public portion of Facebook exactly like having a conversation that can be overheard by anyone on the entire site. That way, I'm not saying something that will come back to haunt me.

If I want to have a private conversation, I go to the message feature, or the chat. Message for really private, where I say let's move to email.

It's a social site and I tend to conduct myself as if I were in a group when I'm on it.

I'm still not too sure about the whole thing. I hang in there, but nearly came close to shutting down the account the other day.

Who knows? I'll keep it for now but it really is a day by day basis.

I guess I thought there would me more discussion, rather like the sort we used to have here...

Not what it seems to be for. :confused3

I have all my settings that "only friends" can see anything I do, but you need to consider that regardless, whatever you post could be possibly seen by anyone.

Take for example, that my parents visited last Thanksgiving. We cleaned the turkey and due to an unfortunate series of events, my mom dropped the (glass) bowl of turkey on the floor from the fridge and broke it, we had to throw away all the leftoevers from a 21 lb turkey! :scared1: The good news was that she never experienced poverty and didn't really clean the bird, so the carcass was left and I got an additional pound or so off there through thorough turkey cleaning. I posted something to that effect on my status and just last week Mom and I were talking about FB. She said, "Yeah when we were down there at Thanksgiving I read something you posted about me dropping all the turkey and I realized that if I had an account I didn't want to be your friend!" She had sat down at my computer and I had a facebook page up and she read the responses on my own computer!

I was always careful, but now I know I need to be ultra careful!

I already knew that anything I posted on a public page was visible to everyone and searchable through Google, so I have pretty much stopped commenting on those pages.

I love FaceBook Chat! One of my dear friends is on bed rest and I chat with her daily. :)

I like the message system, too. Handy for when I don't feel like e-mailing.

DVC~OKW~96, do you have your friends set into groups? You can message the group and start a discussion. It's only visible to the members you send it to - it won't be on your wall or anything.

When I have a work question I will message all of the other nannies and get their ideas that way. My wall posts are pretty neutral.

DO NOT...
I will come hurt you missy!
Hang in there FB changes - evolves - devolves - reshapes -comes back.

Ditto!

(Wally! It's all your fault she feels like that!)

Yeah, I've seen too many examples of bad stuff getting out through FB and am very wary of joining it.

I think you should all come back and chat here!

Conck -- I'm sorry to hear about your cat.

I have my posts set to public, because I really don't care LOL

Tell your mom thanks for the thought though, that's sweet of her :)

I typically have FB open in one window and the DIS in another. :rotfl2:

I really hadn't ever stopped to consider that FB would post my friends' status updates on my mother's news feed. It still seems very strange.

But consider this:
One of my friends is pregnant. We have a TON of mutual friends, but almost NOBODY else knew until very recently. I was careful not to ever mention it on her Wall or on her status, but if I had mentioned it on her status and then it was posted to somebody else's news feed that could have been awkward!! :scared1:

Well, I am glad I found out your status goes to her news feed! :lmao: Just for future reference!

She really was sorry to hear about your cat, and she thought if you lived in Dallas you might want to have the cats my sister is giving away.

We still have 4 cats and 8 birds, so I'm ok for now :lmao:

Although a friend of mine's dog just had puppies, and I'm thinking of claiming one...:rolleyes1

I'm not sure she was thinking just of you in that proposal. I see that there may be a plan to drive the cats to my mother's and leave them with her. She may have been trying to save herself! :rotfl2:

Puppies are sweet. ;)

My DP has never had a dog. These are just little things too, their dad is a mini-pin and mom is half mini-pin half toy poodle.

My mother has a yappy, not-housebroken daschund that my sister got from a shelter. Both of my sisters like to get animals they can't take care of and them dump them on my mother.
