I've been trying to learn the "art of photography" over the last year or so in my limited spare time. I currently have a P/S Olympus SP 500. I find this to be a very good camera for many uses.

Even so, I'm looking to upgrade to a DSLR. I'd like to stick around 1,000 to 1,500. I've been doing some research, but I was hoping to learn on some expertise from you guys and maybe learn from "your mistakes" or knowledge.

This is going to have to be a purchase that last me a while, so I'd like to get a good camera that fits my needs. I've heard a lot of good things about the Nikon D90. This is what I'm leaning towards. Any other suggestions? Advice?

I'd recommend reading the camera reviews on dpreview.com and stevesdigicams.com.

Whatever you choose, don't just think about the initial price of the camera itself. You won't be satisfied with the kit lens...nobody ever is, and they definitely aren't cheap, lol. ;)

I personally have a Sony A350, and I'm quite happy with it. That being said, I'm a complete beginner with my DSLR and would probably be just as happy with a Canon, Nikon, etc....simply because I know practically nothing about what I'm doing yet.

Go to your local camera store and play. Being a Nikon owner, the D90 is a great camera. If you are totally new to photography it may be a little advanced in what it can do, but you should be able to grow into it.

You will hear from all the canon, pentax, sony owners theirs are good also. I guess they are? LOL. We like to fight over brands but they all are good.

Figure out the one that fits your hand, your skills, and your budget.

Do consider that the kit lens will be great to start but you will want more as you grow.

It looks like you are considering the intermediate level models. For Pentax, check out the K20D. For Canon it is the 50D and 40D. Buydig has a good deal on the K20D right now. It is $857.95 with kit lens, free extended warranty, gadget bag, and Sandisk 4GB card. For about $200 more, you can get the 16-45mm lens instead of the kit, which is really about a $300 upgrade.
