We are cruising 45 days from today. We got a call today from our TA that we can upgrade from our guaranteed 12 to a cat. 8 or 9 for 149.00. We havent even been given our stateroom numbers yet? Should we wait to see if we get a free upgrade? I havent really ever heard anyone discuss this type of scenario before? Is this normal? Thanks for any help on this.

That is a very good price for a cat 8. I would take it if it was me. There is no guarantee that you will get upgraded past a cat 11 if you are a family of 4 and maybe you can pick your stateroom this way?

If 4 in cabin you are going to get some kind of upgrade as there are no cat 12's that sleep 4. May only be an 11. If 4 in your room i would pay 149 to guarantee the split bath of cat 8 and 9's. Also, you may be able to actually select your cabin number. That being said we are sailing June 13th and got free upgrades to a cat 9(from a cat12 gty) with only 2 in the room. As others have said book what you are willing to take:) No rhyme or reason to upgrades.

We got a call to upgrade from a cat 6 to cat 4 for a fee. If you pay for the upgrade, you can chose your room #, whereas if you wait for room assignments then you are left with whatever they give you. That seems like a great rate to upgrade to cat 8 or 9. I don't think you would get a "free" upgrade beyond this.

We are a family of 4 so we will get the cat. 11. We are traveling with 3 other families and all booked together so they are being offered this also. Do they usually offer upgrades like this or is this new? I WONDER if because there are so many in our group, if that lessons our chance for a free upgrade. Thanks guys for responding so quickly!

I have heard of this being done before but never this low of a price offered.

I'd take a guaranteed window vs a 30-40% shot at one in a New York minute!!

Having multiple rooms linked does not necessarily increase or decrease your chances of getting assinged to Cat 8's or 9's via your Cat 12. For $149 (or less than the cost of excursion for your family) I'd lock it in, but that's just me.

(and I'm saying that because I just got a Cat 11 assignment on my Cat 12 Gty and would jump at this in a heartbeat, but I haven't been given that opportunity :upsidedow)

We upgraded ourselves from a cat. 11 and 12 to two cat. 9's (there are 6 of us, so we booked two rooms). Upgrading ourselves 7 months from our cruise date, cost me $682.00 total for the two rooms. So I'd definately take that deal you 've been offered. I'm hoping that either shortly before we sail, or at the port, we are offered a free upgrade to another category, but if not, at least I know we'll be happy and comfortable in the two 9's we've now got!

Sounds like we better take it. Do you have any suggestions on what area of the ship we should go for?

Deck 5, 6 or 7 forward cat 8 if available. :) Best area on the ship to be IMO.

Is that $149pp? If you don't know- I'd ask. if it's per person- I'd probably wait and see what I might get, especially if that's times 4 people. but if it's $149 per ROOM- yeah I'd pay that to be for sure to get a cat 9 or 8.

It is 149.00 per room. You guys are so helpful. Thanks so much. This is our first cruise so I am unsure about alot of the details.

Well in that case- I concur with others- that's a great price to be able to be assured the split bath and probably have a choice of rooms rather than "take what you get". I mean I've even heard of horror stories (although not common!) that someone was upgraded (free) but then got to the port and was moved back down to a cat 12. So yeah for that price for a guarantee of the higher category and probably a choice of room- that's a good deal!

You know- this may be a new thing they are trying. I mean in the past DCL didn't offer as many discounts/promos and in the past it was rare for someone to get a free upgrade. But lately there have been many different offers to get the ships full in this economy and everything- and lately a lot of extra cat 12 gtys have been booked and then a lot of people got free upgrades. So I wonder if now they are trying a new tactic- BEFORE the 30-35 days where they normally would start assigning rooms and upgrading the cat 12 gtys if they have too many booked- contacting those in some cat 12's and asking them if they'd like to pay a bargain price to upgrade? That way they get atleast a little something extra for the upgrade instead of giving all the upgrades free? that makes sense- to me anyways LOL

Are you on the 6-25 Wonder? That's what we're booked on in a cat 12. There are 4 of us and we haven't heard anything yet. I'd be willing to pay that amt for a definite "room with a view."

You have to keep in mind that all these upgrades, whether free or paid, that are happening now are extremely uncommon for DCL. The ship bookings are low due to the economy and no cruise line wants to sail with a half empty ship. If they offer free or paid upgrades to those in the the lower categories that are already booked they can then offer those lower categories to CM's, FL residents and TA's at a greater discount. So in the end they can hopefully sail with a ship full of very happy passengers.

Yes we are on the 6/25 Wonder. I went ahead and got the upgrade for 149.00 but I am thinking I better see if I can upgrade to something else. We ended up at the bottom of the ship and this kind of freaks me out. Is it noisey down there? Anyone else on here ever get stuck in the basement?

I have no experience on the lower decks, but from what I have read around here, it may be better than you think. Less movement the lower you are and also more quiet. We are cruising in July and I purposely booked deck 2 for the movement issue.

Glad to see someone else is on the 6-25 Wonder. I hope we get upgraded to a cat 9 since we will have 2 12 yr old boys with us. Which travel agancy are you booked with. We are with DU and have not heard anything.

Category 9 on deck 1 is not the basement of the ship. We've sailed on Deck 1 (it's ground level) before and this time when I upgraded us, I picked the exact same staterooms. That ground level deck is SO quiet and peaceful! Not a lot of traffic in the halls, I loved it! I would say it's one of the best areas for a stateroom (mind you we were and will be almost in the middle of the ship, near the midship elevators).
