Another UPDATE, bottom pg. 5 - Don't think I can deny there's a problem. (ADD/ADHD)

That was a beautiful poem!! For years I would say that my son was just "being a boy" that he would grow out of these things - learn to behave -- etc - all the while being frustrated and mad - punishing continuously and wondering why he could not change - I don't know if it was denial or lack on information - (I'm a 60's child - ADHD kids were just he "bad" kids then) - anyway - being at my wits end - knowing there was a sweet boy in there with loads of potential I finally took my son to pediatrician and asked for referral for testing - getting books at the library and everything now seems to make sense - I am much calmer. His school has completed the assesment tests and I am waiting for an appointment.

I received a letter home today from the psycologist and it looks like things are changing just a bit. Basically it said that since DS's learning is not impacted at this time the psycologists superiors believe we do not need to go through the school. They want us to go to the Doctor for an evaluation at this time. So now I will wait until Monday and see when I can get an appointment. I am not sure what this means overall, but I will keep you all posted.

Again, thanks for your support.

I know it was mentioned in some posts - that there is other things to try before offically ruling ADD/ADHD. My DS,2, was talking at 1 and then got a couple of ear infections and quit talking, so now he is in speech. His speech "teacher" has given me many books to read or look into about the signs DS shows. The book: No More ADHD- Mary Ann Block (she has serval "No More" books that have been recomended to me) This book was very helpful to me about the change of diet and how it totally changes the behavior- DS gets very limited milk now-and it has made an a big change in his learning.

I will keep your family in my prayers.:D

If you can find someone that does a really complete testing. Ideally they should test for social, attention, mental and learning issues.

As mentioned there are several things that have the same symptoms as ADD/ADHD but are treated very differently. A child with dyslexia will act out in a learning environment (I have one of these). Other things like Sensory Intergration, Asperger's even manic depressive can be found in children. Some things can usually be ruled out right away but a complete testing should find any of these problems.

HUgs to you. I'm hoping you get some answers soon.

Just bumping up to the first page so I can find it easier later today when search is usually down---I scrolled through 20 pages to find this. We are going to the doctor today to get his diagnosis as to whether or not DS has ADHD. I will post an UPDATE after we get back.

Keeping this bumped for you, tiggerlover. Good luck today.

Good luck today. I have a ds (18) that has ADHD and a dd (10) just diagnosed with ADD. I understand your struggle. Make sure you ask lots of questions. Let us know how things went.

ARGH!!!!!

A two hour drive for nothing!!! So I have no update right now. Some how the evaluations the school sent over a week ago never made it to the doctor! We know the school psychologist gave it to the runner that goes between the military bases (another psychologist), we know the runner delivered it to the psych office at the other military base and that it was given to the director last week, but said director doesn't recall receiving them! This is what the doctor was able to determine thus far. We went through so much to get these done on a timely manner and get them to the appropriate people I am just disgusted. So the doctor said he would personally go search them down and call us, so now we wait. I am just so bummed, we have been working towards this point for two months now and I was finally supposed to get our diagnosis today, I feel so let down.

I will post an update when I can.

I just can't believe what a run-around you are getting!!

You mean you didn't know you were supposed to play secretary?

I really hope things go smoothly after this...Here is some PD for your frustration today!

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

I'm so sorry. Don't you just hate it when you slip through the cracks? It's almost like they don't understand that you have feelings.

Hang in there. Hope they call you soon.

tiggerlover-I feel your frustration! I hope things get worked out quickly for you and the doctor can give you some help!

Good luck from a mom and wife of ADHD'ers.

So sorry to hear of your complications. This is why we keep copies of everything we get our hands on! Too many reports have gotten lost.

That's very frustrating for you, I know. Having a long drive sure didn't help matters. At least they will phone you and maybe you won't have to wait for the travel time to hear the results when they finally locate them. I felt like I was going to jump out of my skin when we were waiting. Just keep in mind that this is all being done to improve your DS quality of life...that he is a happy, healthy boy and he is going to be just fine. I was getting so overwhelmed in our case that I actually began to create more stress for us all because I began to think of his testing on a level similar to a major health issue...I know education is major, but I needed to calm down and logically see the situation for what is was. <<<HUGS>>> to you, take a deep breath and hang out on the boards, anything to give yourself a break from the situation for a few minutes.

People in Italy are not too concerned about Customer Service. Not like they are here in the States. I'm very sorry. That really stinks.

I guess if there is a "next time" perhaps you can call ahead to make sure that everything is in place.

Good luck!

OMG!!! Not to change the subject, but I just realized I was tagged by the Tag Fairy!!! OMG!!!

Some thoughts:

Tiggerlover, you say your son's symptoms are fairly recent in onset, and seem to coincide with increased intake of Fanta. The first thing I would do is cut out the Fanta for a couple of weeks and see if it helps! ADD/ADHD children show signs of the syndrome in early childhood, though it usually doesn't get diagnosed until they get in school. Food allergies can look like ADHD.

Yes, there are lots of parents of ADHD kids here! Wonder if they got it from all of us high-stimulation craving Disney lovers? The perfect ADHD vacation wouldn't be lying around on a beach, that's for sure!

We have been in this battle for five years now, since my DD was diagnosed in 2nd grade. She's got the "checked out" type, and last summer we finally got her tested for Auditory Processing Disorder as well. She has a severe deficit, meaning she just doesn't get spoken language most of the time, especially if there is any other noise. You can imagine what this does to her in the classroom, not to mention socially. She gets no help at school, and is not considered LD because she still manages A's. She's highly gifted and compensates. So it's up to us to figure out how to help her survive at school. Earlier this year, we found out she was having regular meltdowns at school! She has a history of mood swings, so I was afraid she was Bi-polar too. Turned out that a new medication we had her on was the culprit.

Since that scare last fall, I have started to give her twice daily doses of high quality DHA/EPA Omega-3 - fish oil. I think it has helped tremendously. Just last week she had a social crisis at school that lasted for days. It involved being shunned by friends she had known for years for no good reason. She handled it so well, sad but philosophically. Things changed again this week for the better (mid school girls!), probably helped by her mature way of handling it.

She's on the honor roll with a 4.0 average so far, and on a competitive dance team with kids 2-3 years older. She loves dance and has a talent for it, and I really think daily strenuous activity helps with the ADD. She also takes her medication every day, with an extra dose for heavy homework nights. In contrast, my very bright, athletically gifted nephew may not be able to play sports in high school due to poor grades. His parents refuse to medicate his ADD. I don't understand preferring dropping out of high school (a real possibility) over medication, but that's just me.

It's a continuing war, but just think how creative, energetic, and truly sweet your kids are. My DD would never treat a friend the way she has been treated many times. She's loyal and generous to a fault. I'm going to do everything I can to help her make it in this world. And we're giving her some great family memories of trips to WDW!
