Another trip insurance question

i am comparing a couple plans an see the following:

AIG Travelguard has the best I believe for missing cruise due to flight being delayed or cancelled. If I am reading it right as long as any delay or cancellation causes us to miss we would be covered. This plan only has $25,000 per person for medial coverage and is "secondary"

Global Alert has a policy with $250,000 for medical and not secondary. Their trip interrruption part states that the delay of flight has to be at least 12 hours. The flight we were looking at leaves at 8:30 pm arriving 12am the day of the cruise. So we would still be ok right? if we were on a flight 12 hours later we should be landed by noon. Not ideal but technically could work right?

I guess my question is does $25,000 in medical coverage sound reasonable? I know anything can happen. Or should I go with Global Alert?

Medical evacuation can run start at $10,000 and rise from there. Depends if you need a medical airflight, with nurses attending, etc. And that doesn't cover the actual medical costs you may incur stabilizing your condition so you can be transported.

What does your regular health insurance provide? Many plans consider foreign to be out-of-network and either won't cover any of it or have a higher deductible. Some domestic insurance plans do have foreign coverage, so it's important to check your own. One thing to consider with medical is "evacuation" -- which is the exorbitant charge to fly someone to receive treatment, be that helicopter evac from the ship to the closest port or from a foreign port back to the U.S. once stabilized but needing further treatment. Many will say "but the Coast Guard does this for free" except the Coast Guard may not be the closest and/or available medivac.

As with many insurance decisions, you'll need to weigh your risks and chose the plan that best suits your needs.

Enjoy your cruise!

I usually try to avoid secondary insurance for out of country trips where personal medical may have significant out of network costs or coverage gaps. That really requires you knowing your personal coverages very well. I'm on a very average plan through work. I usually look for something with around $100,000 in medical and decent trip interruption coverage (missed / delayed flights, luggage replacement, etc.).

Thanks. I don't know what our current plan is for out of country coverage but I would be pretty certain it isn't good. I will probably end up going with the Global Alert. I haven't booked our flight there yet so we may end up choosing an earlier one we just liked the leaving late so the kids wouldn't miss school that Friday. I know it is reccomended flying in the day before...not sure if arriving 12 am is still considered playing it safe?

Getting in may depend on where you're coming from. I think midnight on a direct flight is hopefully ok (other than at that time of day you may be risking flight crew hours and the need to find a new crew if delayed). If you have to connect, I'd think about a bit earlier if possible. On the plus side, MCO is usually a pretty popular destination and you do have some options in worst case scenarios (Miami and renting a car, Sanford, Ft. Lauderdale).

We always fly in the night before a cruise, but have had arrival times only a couple hours before yours (9:30pm).

This would be a direct flight from Chicago Midway to MCO. 2.5 hr flight. Southwest.
