Another Thyroid Question

On Fri., I talked to Dr. (gyn), who said my blood work came back w/thyroid level of 5.1. He said this "wasn't bad at all", was "off a little bit" and this is "just how I might be" (having this "score"). He wants to re-test in a few weeks to see if there are any changes. Although I hate blood work, this is fine w/me and I plan on having it done. I'd rather get answers and nip things in the bud!

My question is ... is 5.1 really "not bad at all"? And, is it possible that I "might be" this way, always having a 5.1?

Of course, I was too stunned to think of the appropriate questions to ask. I have been thinking about it all weekend. I can't call Dr. b/c I'd get the answering service and this isn't an emergency and I can't call tomorrow b/c he's off.

As usual ... not asking for medical diagnosis ... but maybe someone can give some insight?!

ETA - I have none of the "symptoms" they give you!

I have no idea. I have hypothyroidism and don't know anything about what is a good level and what is a bad level LOL

I can tell you that I have 5.7 TSH level and my primary didn't want to treat it. I asked for a referral to an endocrinologist because I wasn't feeling well and had many symptoms of hypothyroidism. Well, to make a long story short, the endocrinologist immediately put me on Synthroid and said I should start feeling better in about 2 months. I will require another blood test in about 6 weeks to ensure I have the right strength of the medication.

Definitely see an endo!! He told me they generally treat 3.5 and greater TSH levels. Hope this info helps. Good luck!!

Thanks for the input. I will wait for my 2nd round of blood tests which I'll prob. go for on Sept. 14th-ish. If the level is still the same, I'll request a referral to an endocrinologist.

I don't want things to get "out of hand". I prefer to take care of them before they escalate!

Is it odd that I have none of the symptoms?

Thanks for the input! Would love to hear what others have to say as well!

Can sub-acute appendicitis (which I'm walking around with now) effect the thyroid and results? That would be interesting to know!

It doesn't surprise me that you aren't having symptoms since your TSH level isn't all that high, but it isn't in the normal range, either. It is possible that other medical problems could be elevating your TSH. Why don't they take out your appendix?

Long story short ... Surgeon wants to see if it'll heal "on its own".

I had pains on July 4th and ER Drs. diagnosed ovarian cysts (I was at Disney at the time). Finally got into my gyn. in mid July and he sent me for sonograms and bloodwork. Had high white count, so he put me on 10 days of antibiotics before. Sonograms came back as cysts (as it did in ER at Disney). Gyn. didn't think it was cysts and wasn't thrilled w/sonograms so he sent me for a CT on Aug. 17th, which revealed the sub-acute appendix. I have been walking around w/appendix prob. since July 4th!!!! Even after a round of antibiotics, it showed the appendix was infected/abcessed. Was immediately sent to surgeon, who says "let's see if it heals on it's own since you're not in any pain" and sent me for colonoscopy, which showed nothing (Surgeon thought possible appendicial tumor). Well .. since that came back clean, surgeon wants to wait. I wasn't in any pain when I went to see surgeon, but I have been in pain. Surgeon still wants to wait until the next set of CT scans on 9/12 to do anything. If nothing has changed on the CT scans, then they want to remove it. Stupid part is that you don't need the appendix and they could have done this weeks ago and I'd prob. be feeling a lot better (w/the pains) than I do now!!!
