We love our stockings, and love opening them, but they do not contain the most expensive gifts.
Usually candy, calendars, gift cards (we are all adults), some fun trinkets, books, DVDs.
We open them first, then get breakfast and open wrapped presents while eating. DD plays Santa and we take turns opening so everyone can actually see what everyone else gets.
We also open one present on Christmas Eve.....that was always a huge deal for the kids, because they didn't want clothes!
They want something to amuse and entertain that evening.
Oh...and always, new pajamas on Christmas Eve also....and when they were small a stuffed animal to sleep with. Now it is a puzzle book of some kind.
