At what grade level would you/ did you stop sending teacher's gifts? DD is in middle school 7th grade. She said she thought she would be teased if I sent a little something to each teacher. Is this true? Just wondering.

My intention is to stop once the kids are in middle school, and they have more than just one classroom teacher (here it is 6th grade). If the kids have an absolute favorite, I might consider a gift for that one.

that is when we stopped also.....7th grade here though......

my apologies to all teachers of older kids :guilty: ...but we just can't give gifts to alll....the class mom still collected for a class gift and we contributed to that though......

8th grade was the last year for me. I sent my teachers some like cake mix and they really liked it.
But this year I am not giving anything to any of my teachers.

We stop sending teacher gifts when DD entered middle school, 6th grade. However, DS11 is in a self-contained class with one teacher and 2 parapros who work their butts off with him. I send them Christmas and end of year gifts, plus treats during the year. I wish I could afford to take them all the WDW :teeth: They deserve it. He goes to middle school next year and I imagine it will be similar. As long as we have teachers who are giving 110%, I'll be giving gifts.

It is true... she would get teased. I have this on good authority from my own 7th grader. You could always drop the gift off at the front office to show your own appreciation for your child's teacher, but forcing her to deliver it would be devastating. Kids are so sensitive at this age!

So very true!

I honestly don't think I ever gave a teacher a Christmas gift, no one really did, at least not that I can recall. But I can remember 7th grade rather well. Any kid toting around gifts for each teacher would be tormented for some time after that, it's just not 'cool'.

ITA! ::yes:: Girls may be able to get away with it longer, but my boys would rather die a slow death than bring a teacher a gift! As a teacher myself, I would so appreciate a letter that tells me how I'm doing. We so often don't hear parents' thoughts about our efforts. Email or write if you'd like to let them know they are appreciated and let his or her principal know too!

Excellent idea. Thanks. And thank you all for your responses. Maybe I will drop off a couple of gifts at the office for the couple of teachers who went above and beyond.

This is my sixth year teaching in a public H. S. and I have gotten a few gifts from kids, mostly girls. Honestly, I thought it was sweet at the time, but I certainly understand why kids don't give high school teachers gifts. I do have to say that I have gotten several Christmas cards from students with really nice messages in them, and I keep them in a box and they bring a smile to my face whenever I come across that box. I would highly recommend having your kids send middle school or high school teachers cards with a simple message. If they're too embarrassed, you can drop them in the main office and have them placed in teacher's boxes.

I would also recommend against just giving cards to the "favorite" teachers. This is a big problem with students who have a lot of teachers during the day. Usually teenagers' favorite teachers are the lazy teachers who just allow them to break the rules a lot and give away high grades for little effort. Upper-level teachers who really push kids academically and hold them accountable for their behavior are generally very unpopular and unappreciated. Please don't allow popularity contests to determine which teachers get an acknowledgement from your kids. Trust me, I've just returned to H.S. teaching after a few years away, and I forgot how unappreciated you feel. Teenagers whine about every assignment, gripe if you make them follow the rules, groan if you won't have a party or let them sleep, like so-and-so teacher down the hall who always shows movies and never makes them read. A little thing like a Christmas card can really make a difference for an exhausted middle or high school teacher.

My DD12 (8th grade) has seven middle school teachers. Yesterday, she brought each a $5.00 gc to Caribou Coffee (our local version of Starbucks).

One of her teachers is a DVC member so we also gave him a Disney Coffee mug from the Disney store.

***BTW, no teasing at all. :)

We did it until Middle School with the exception of last year, oldest wanted to give to one teacher....said she couldn't do that so we found a great deal on highlighters and gave a holiday cup of a dozen highlighters to all of her teachers.....they absolutely loved it!!!

I actually gave Christmas gifts/end of year gifts to my two film & video teachers in high school. I loved them dearly, and credit my film teacher with inspiring me to go to college for film/video. I do believe I gave them the gifts after class when all the other students had left, though!
