My parents are renting from Budget and would prefer to pay cash for the tolls.
Is this possible? Does the sunpass box come with the car automatically, do they need to decline sunpass with Budget when they pick up the car?

Thanks for any help you can give on this.

They need to ask the agent how the program works and how to shut off the box if it is in the car.

We just did this in Aug. with our Budget rental. The SunPass is attached to the windshield but we did not include it in our rental so the pass switch was turned to off. Just make sure you don't include it in the rental and when you pick up the car make sure that the box switch is on off. If you are going to use 417 to get to Disney, the tolls were $1.50 each - two on the way to Disney and two on the way back to MCO.

We may also rent from Budget and weighing the advantages/disadvantages of each option. If we pay cash for tolls, wondering about how much this will slow us down as we will also be travelling around other parts of Florida visiting family. Do the cash lanes move along fairly quickly or can they get quite backed up? I know this will depend on which area so I will ask specifically about the stretch between MCO and WDW.

The cash lanes can get backed up but usually a max of 10 cars in front of you and typically less than that. The delay isn't all that much versus paying for the rental company's toll program. However, depending on where else in Florida you're going, you may or may not have other tolls to deal with.

I usually rent from Avis while down there (Budget's "Big Brother"), and almost always do cash only on my trips. My last car was actually a car equipped with an EZ-Pass and Pa plates, so I wouldn't be surprised if they don't actually have a Sunpass transponder attached to the windshield.

A Lot of rental agencies down n Florida utilize a "Plate-Pass" system, which just uses the picture of the car's plates to tie into the toll charges. In Avis' case, they send thru another charge usually a few days after I return the car for all the tolls I incurred during my rental as well as the daily fee they charge by utilizing the system. (Again... Assuming Budget works the same way).

If their only toll trips are between the airport and their resort, They can do cash. If I recall, utilizing the southern exit from the airport there are 2 toll booths between the airport and the International Drive exit (which drops you off close to 535 and the road turns into EPCOT Center Drive). The main road continues as the express lanes, so if they want to pay cash they'll have to make sure to 'exit' to the right to get to the booths. As long as they don't drive thru the toll booth, they won't need to worry about getting charged by Budget for use of the cashless toll system (And for extra safety, try and request a receipt which you can use to dispute any charges that may come after the fact).

in the Immediate Disney area, The only time I got caught and had no choice but utilize the agencies toll pass was when I was trying to get from the Walmart on 535 to Animal Kingdom. I saw there was a more convienent way that going to World Center Drive off 192 or back up to EPCOT Center Drive via an exit onto the tollway just south of the Walmart. it wasn't until I turned onto the entrance ramp however that I discovered it was an exact change only toll. Oops.
