I currently have the regular and premier sw cc's but am getting ready to close one because I really don't need both and don't want to pay the annual fee. I already received the 50k bonus points on both and the companion pass last year. My husband would like us to open a joint credit card together (he's NOT on either of my cards) to use for purchases instead of our check card. I was hoping to get another 50k bonus points by him opening a new sw card and then adding me to the card. Has anyone had experience with this? Do I need to wait a while to be added to his card? Is there a different card with better benefits we should consider instead? I just want to feel like we're maximizing whatever offers are available.

Thanks!:thanks:

If you can meet the spending requirement ($4K in 3 months), the Chase Sapphire is a better card. 40K in Ultimate Rewards points when you meet the spend. 5K when you add your first authorized user and they make a purchase. No annual fee for the first year. Rewards are more flexible (you can even transfer them into Southwest Rapid Rewards, but they won't count toward a Companion Pass).

I would hold off getting the Southwest card for a time when you want to get another Companion Pass. Then do as you did before and get both the regular and the premier card.

I love the Sapphire preferred card! It has very flexible rewards. If you don't need it right now, I'd wait until they do a 50k or 60k sign up bonus!

Also if you have the Sapphire preferred you can bank points with the chase Freedom (free card and cash back only without sapphire or ink card), which has rotating 5x bonus categories.

He could likely get both if he has good credit and not a lot of cards.

I very much want the Freedom card, but Chase will not give me any more cards :( womp womp

My new favorite rewards card is the Barclay Arrival. We put everything on it and get 2% on everything. You can use the rewards dollars against travel purchases and then get another 10% back in points after you redeem them - so it's effectively 2.1% on travel. I think our initial bonus was $400 after the minimum spending. It does have an annual fee though.

Yes. Your DH can open a card and have you as a user. We just did this. My name was on the previous cards as main person so put DH on this one and then added me and the 2 kids. (DS16 is driving now and wanted him to have a card for emergencies so got one for him and DD). We used the card right away and have the 50,000 points already.

Lynn, glad to hear this--this is EXACTLY what we do. I got both last May, added DH & the 2 teens (for gas & emergencies since DS20 is away at school). I wasn't sure if I needed to close mine or cancel his or what to do this.
With #1 in Texas for college, #2 heading to North Carolina or Texas (plus we love to travel), companion passes save us SO SO much $!!

I have the card as well. You can downgrade it before your one year is up so you don't have to pay the annual fee. You'll still get 2 points for travel and one other thing (gas or restaurants-can't remember which) and then 1 point for everything else. I have heard that they're doing away with the 10% back though.

Edit: I looked it up and the downgraded version is 2x rewards for travel and dining and they're changing the 10% points back to 5% for existing cardholders. For new cardholders it's effective immediately.

Well the downgrade to 5% sucks. My old favorite card was the AMEX Blue Cash, but we've discovered our "everyday" purchases are way more than gas, groceries, and drug store (we got 5% back on them and 1% on everything else). So I think the fee probably still makes sense for us since we put so much on it. Do you know when the downgrade happens?

It depends on when the card was opened. I know for me it's next year. Not sure of the exact month.
