We will be heading to WDW for President’s Day Weekend and wonder what to expect. We usually go either Spring Break or Christmas Week so obviously crowds don’t intimidate us but we are (obviously) hoping to be able see the new Pandora section of AK and of course check out the rides … particularly FoP.

We will be spending the day at AK on Monday and planning to get there ahead of rope drop and stand-by for FoP. We will of course try for FP’s but not going to count on it. If we do luck out and score them at the 60 day point then we can ride twice!

We additionally plan to head over to AK on Saturday evening in the hopes that we can stand by for FoP as we hear the wait times drop as the park nears closing time. How far ahead of closing time should we plan on getting there? Do they cut people off from cueing up at some point? I have been watching the wait times on the MDE app and have seen wait times that go well past the park closing time and wonder at what point do they say “enough”.

Any other suggestions?

You've got your plans.
You intend to arrive early, and try to ride before the crowds.
You plan to try to ride in the late evening, after the crowds.
You plan on trying for FPs.
I don't see any other "strategies" needed.

My understanding is that you can get in line any time up until park closing. On another thread someone suggested getting in line about 10 minutes before park closing. Hopefully, someone else on the boards can confirm. Good luck!

This is true.

I was the first person at the tapstile and walked onto FoP in July. Being Pres weekend, I'd frontload your wait time and arrive more than an hour before park open. I think they opened Pandora a good 20 minutes early, if I'm remembering correctly.
But if you're ok waking up early, you may as well do your waiting while the park is closed - and if you can be one of the first people on FoP, you can have short waits elsewhere afterwards ... while so many people are waiting in line for the ride you already did.
