Hi guys! My DD's and I are going to WDW this summer and have been reading alot about Soarin'. Sounds awesome, but I have some concerns...namely motion sickness. The two things I have gotten more than a bit queasy on were Body Wars, in Epcot of course, and Back To The Future, in Universal. I do fine on Star Tours and Spider Man...go figure :confused3 . I really don't know why I'm asking, I know everyone's different. Just hoping someone could relate to being sick on some rides and not on others and how they compare to Soarin'.

This really wouldn't be such a big issue except one of my DD's, (namely my too cool 19yo), would just die if her mother got sick on a ride. Hmmmm, on second thought, maybe I should just take my chances :rotfl: . Thanks in advance, Tracey

Of the rides that "move", Soarin' is one of the smoothest, easiest-riding attractions in all of WDW.

Since there are few dramatic movements of ride system, there is no physical reason for your body to "react" to negatively to them.

The major feeling of "motion" comes from the FILM itself.

So, if you think you might be feeling a bit "oddly" about it (I doubt that you WILL) you can just "close your eyes", listen to the magnificent soothing musical score, and wait the very short (TOO short) time for the attraction to end.

Soarin' has the broadest appeal, to more guests of all ages, of any ride currently operating at WDW.

I was concerned about Soarin' also. I almost passed out on Back to the Future at Universal. I get queesy on Star Tours, but tolerate it one time per trip just to say I've been on it. I can't watch IMAX movies because they make me sick. In fact, although we LOVED Mickey's Philharmagic, I can't watch the part where Aladdin & Jasmine fly through the streets. Anyway, back to Soarin'. I LOVED IT!! Didn't get queesy or anything. We were in one of the "lower" rows of seats & I think that may have helped - don't know for sure though. I say go for it. It is such an awesome attraction, I would hate for you to miss out on it. Good Luck! Besides, I'm with you. It's always fun to embarrass your children!

Thanks Robo for the specific instructions. Hopefully I can remember what to and what not to do and be OK. Thanks also Momoftriplets, it's amazing how similar we are. I can't do IMAX movies and I broke out in a cold sweat in BTTF. My daughter was so concerned that I would get sick and embarrass her that she didn't even watch the BTTF screen. She kept fanning me and saying "You're not going to be sick are you Mom!?" over and over and over again. I couldn't even tell her to hush for concentrating on not getting sick! Regardless, thanks again for the info....i'm going for it...i think.

I am also a victim of the dreaded motion sickness. I get sick on planes, in cars if I'm not driving, on boats, in any house that isn't completely level, and on anything that spins. It makes me ill for hours afterwards also.

At Disney I can't ride Star Tours, Body Wars, and will not attempt Mission Space. Even the Aerosmith coaster and space mountain make me queasy, but I usuallt tough those two out. I'm not sure about Philharmagic or Soarin though...that may be interesting.

I feel for you! I hate having to limit myself because of this condition. I don't take Dramamine because it makes me feel like a zombie, but I believe that the chewable Bonine worked well for me last time. I've heard others mention a patch, meclizine, and ginger pills.

I say give it a try, it really is a cool ride. I get motion sick on alot of things too, I won't go on alot of the roller coasters and fast things. Soarin is okay though, there was one scene, I can't remember now what it was, that almost got me, but it didn't last very long. And like someone said you could close your eyes and hopefully be okay.

Philharmagic is just a 3D movie like "MuppetVision".

There is no motion of the seats whatsoever.
The other poster was referring to the scenes IN THE FILM of riding on a magic carpet (one of the BEST scenes in the attraction IMHO).

But its a BREEZE (pun intended) to just close your eyes (or take off your 3D "opera glasses") for the 20 seconds or so that this sequence is on the screen.

Philharmagic is a masterpiece.
Don't miss it.

If you can handle Star Tours you should be okay on Soarin'. They both use the screens to simulate the motion, but Star Tours also uses the actual motion of the simulator, which Soarin' does very little of, if any.

Soarin' at DCA has been open for about 5 years now and motion sickness has not been something commonly reported on Disneyland sites.

I cannot tolerate Star Tours/Body Wars/Back to the Future etc - I get sick on planes - cannot read in a car/boat/plane etc. I was worried about Soarin' but I was perfectly fine!!! :)

So the seats don't move at all? I thought there was a drop or something.

The seats DO move but there's no sudden movement of anything at all...a lot of it is psychological...overall it's a great, relaxing experience

I had never had any problems with motion sickness until the last couple of years and it wasn't bad at all. It just meant that I couldn't ride any of the coasters 4x in a row like I used to. So I would ride the coasters and have to take a long break before riding again.

This year, however, was different. For the first time ever, Star Tours made me feel queazy. It caught me totally off guard. So then, I was leery about Soarin' for various reasons. The first time I rode it, aside from holding on with a death grip (but that's another story), I was fine. The next day, I rode it and I felt weird as we were soarin' over the fields. Both times we were in the first row.

It made me a bit sad thinking that maybe my days of taking DGS to Disney, just the two of us, were over due to this new motion sickness problem I have now. Then I realized that I could take Bonine, just like I do on Disney cruises, and hopefully, I will be fine. So that is what I plan on doing next trip... Bonine. I'd rather be drowsy than tell DGS I can't take him to Disney anymore for our grandma/grandson trips.

Good luck on Soarin'. Despite my crazy fears about the ride, I loved it and can't wait to ride again.

Tink

I am going to take bonine, and if I feel any queziness I will just close my eyes till the ride is over.
