another silly question

I have a question that may be really dumb.

If I book a studio for 100 points one year does the points needed in 5 years change? We ask because we plan on buying but want to know if we will need more points for the same unit in 10 or so years. Does that make sense? Thanks for all help!

The points for DVC resorts are relatively fixed. They do change every year for moving holidays, especially for Easter. And they can reallocate the points, but the total number of points has to remain the same. So points could go up during the week, but they might go down on the weekend. Or they could go up in Dec and go down in May.

If your room type changes, though, you'd probably need more points. Or if you decide to bring someone down with you and need more sleeping space, you'd need more points.

That is what I needed to know. We want to figure what we may need in 5 or so years when the kids are a bit older and hoped the points needed stay pretty stable.

You are very wise to ask your questions and get your answers before you sign any papers that will cost you as much as a DVC membership. The more you learn the better you will be able to decide if it is right for you and if so then you can determine what your point needs may be now and in the future. In that line some have found that the minimum number of points is the way to go when they buy in and then add on as their needs increase. Others who decideed they needed 300 points found out that buying two contracts was the way to do it just in case their situation changed and they needed to downsize. The smaller contracts sell faster and sometimes it is possible to keep one contract and take fewer trips rather than give it up completely.

Good question & great answer. We have been using time sharing for over 20 years & have found that it forces us to take the vacations & plan for them early. The DVC plan has wonderful flexability so you can start out slowly & add points as needed in the future. Keep in mind that if you buy from DCV, the minimum contract is 160 points.

Will DVC allow you to make the minimum with 2 80 point contracts? Or is it a solid 160 contract that you must start with?

If you purchase your first contract from DVC, the minimum is a single contract of 160 points.

You can pickup a smaller contract on the resale market.

I am not 100% sure on this, but if you call your guide and ask him, he may be able to work something out for you. One good reason you could give him is that you want two equal contracts to will one each to your children. I did this when I added on at AKV. My guide said she had to get it "ok'd", but everything worked out fine. We recieved 2 50 point contracts. It never hurts to ask. Sometimes you may be surprised by your answer.
With it being your master contract, I can see where they might not do it.

It can never hurt to ask but I was told the minimum was 160 points. I bought 320 points in 2 contracts because they wouldn't give me 3 contracts of 100 points each. I wanted 3 contracts to use with each of our 3 children. We put 5 names on each contract. That way in the future if the our kids wanted to sell one contract they can & keep the other, or whatever. It just provided another option, but they would not split below 160 for the initial contract.

We too were not allowed to split up the initial 160 pt minimum. I asked for (2) 80 pt contracts but was told this wasn't allowed on the first purchase, only add-ons.
