Another Shoe Size Thread, not a poll

I was in a major department store on Saturday looking in the shoe department. I found Keds sneakers, microfiber, just the ones that I really like. And they were on SALE! Well, I asked the young man that was helping customers if he had that style in my size, 5. He said that he would go in the back and look. He comes out with a box, and I started to get very excited, because I had looked at 4 other stores and was told that they did not carry that size. He hands me the box and says they start at size 6.
Well, what good does that do me..........I really wanted to blurt that out to him, but kept my composure and said "thank you anyway" and walked off. Forgive me, but how dumb was that! If I had wanted a 6 I would have asked for a 6......Did he honestly think that I would purchase the 6 and what, maybe stuff the toe with paper..........duhh.
Sorry, just wanted to rant a little. I am still confused by his attitude. Ask for a 5 and bring out a 6.
Has this ever happened to anyone else.............

Yes, it's happened. Sometimes the size they bring out actually fits too. Different shoes, even different styles within the same brand (different styles of Keds, for example) will fit differently. My sister and I both have the same brand of running shoes, but they are different (slightly) styles. Same size-from the day we bought them, mine have fit me better than hers. Hers are the same size, same brand, and too small for my feet. I usually try the size on that the employee brings me and if it's the wrong size then I say that and get out of there.

Well, I wear a size nine, but in some styles I need a ten. If I ask for shoes to be brought out, I almost always ask them to bring both sizes, to see which fits better. If I were you I would have at least tried on the size six. You might have got a surprise. And if you have already tried a six and know they don't fit, well, how is the salesperson to know that?

I think he just went looking for a 5, and when he came up empty, he came out with a 6 to save himself the trip back, in case you asked for a 6 when you found a 5 was unavailable.

I need a narrow width, and I have salespeople tell me all of the time "the manufacturer doesn't make that shoe in a narrow."

Sometimes I go to the manufacturer's site and buy it direct and it does come in a narrow. I don't know what I'd do if I still wore an slender (AAA) like I did when I was younger.

My sizes in clothing differ from brand to brand - from size 8 all the way to 12, and shoes are no different.

I've gotten 8 1/2s all the way to 9 1/2s depending on the brand, shoe type (sneakers/heels), width. I wouldn't have gotten upset with the salesman. I would've just tried them on, and if they don't fit, oh well... just 10 minutes out of my way.

Try to find a 5 1/2 D width someday....it isn't easy being smaller than a 7 sometimes

Yes that has happened to me... I wear about a 7-7.5 depending on size (go up to 8s if they are whole size only type shoes) and I remember going in for a Nike tennis shoe. I told him I needed a 7.5 (Nikes run small) and he came out with an 8 AND an 8.5 saying Nikes run small and I would need 1/2 size larger (and as an aside they were out of 7.5s) I looked at him and said "I'm wearing Nikes right now and have *always* worn a 7.5 in them" He made me try them anyway and sure enough, way too big. For some reason my size isn't carried as much as it used to be (according to the shoe stores I go in to) and so I get people like that all the time giving me 8s.
