Myself, grown DD, and my 5 yr. old granddaughter are trying to plan a trip to WDW and right now it's looking like February..

Would it be worse for DGD to miss her Kindergarten class:

#1 - five straight days in a row (1st week of Feb.)

#2 - Wed, Thurs, Fri, of one week and then Mon, Tues, Wed of the following week (giving her 2 days of school each of those weeks)

#3 - the entire week before winter recess

#4 - the entire week after winter recess
--------------------------

What would you all choose? DGD is extremely bright (she's basically way beyond anything they currently teach in Kindergarten) so the biggest thing she would probably miss is the socialized aspect, yet I can't help wondering what would be in her best interests.. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks!

I don't think any of your choices are bad ones (seeing that your GD is in Kindergarten and very bright) but, if I had to choose, I'd choose the first week of February. The week before and after winter recess would be the toughest, I think. We take our daughter out of school for WDW vacations regularly and have never had any problems - with teachers, make-up homework or her falling behind when we return. Hopefully that trend will continue because we're taking her out of second grade for almost three weeks this October. Have fun planning!

I would really choose the week that works best for the grown ups as a bright child in kindergarten will have no problems being out for a week. If however it all boils down to the little one, I would choose to keep her out one of the full weeks, Febuary being the first choice. Kindergarten teachers often plan weekly themed lessons and if she misses the entire week, she will not even know of things she missed that might have been fun. With two broken weeks she will get a little of two leasons and might miss the "fun" part of both. I was not sure if Winter Breaks means Christmas or a break latter in the winter. if it's Christmas i would avoid both weeks surrounding the holiday. if it is at another time, the week before might be a good choice as most classes do review right before a break and introduce new concepts after a long break.I am sure she will be fine with whatever you decide.

take the week before Christmas/Winter Holiday break. To quote her, "The kids are so excited about the the holidays, special school events like plays & parties, the break, trips, and everything else that most teachers don't plan a full or critical curricullum during that week." But for sure, not the week after the break.

Good luck!

Thanks for all of these replies!!

I guess I'm just suffering from "Grandma Guilt" because this trip was my idea and now I'm second-guessing the wisdom of taking her out of school even though I know it won't affect her academically.. (I was raised in one of those households where you weren't allowed to miss more than 1 day of school unless you were in Intensive Care - in which case you could miss three - LOL..)

Anyhow, you've all made me feel a bit better.. We will avoid taking her out the week AFTER winter break (when they may be starting new things) and probably go with one of the other full weeks..

DD will have a conference with the teacher next month and I'll have her ask then if the teacher has a preference..

(Shhhhhh...don't tell - BUT - I want to take them again next Dec. for the MVMCP but I'm going to try to make that a VERY short trip so there will be minimal time missed from school..;) )

Since your DGD is in Kindgergarten, DON'T worry about it!!!!

Go and enjoy!

Even next year in 1st grade, don't worry so much! It's as they get in the higher grades that they'll miss more and have more make up work.

My DD's in 2nd grade and I haven't told her teacher yet about our trip this December missing 5 days. I'm nervous (just about telling her as I don't want her to yell at me!) but I'm not that worried as my DD is very bright and responsible and it's only 2nd grade. I am very leary of the higher grades, though, like maybe 4th grade on...

Have fun!
