Another reason why I don't like Oprah anymore(warning -a vent)

The sexual relationship was between two consenting adults. As much as incest is a taboo, given the ages of both father and daughter, there was no criminal law being violated, and if there would have been, both would have been equally guilty. There are no applicable laws in our society that treat a 19 year old different from a 43 year old, regardless of their familial relationship.

Without stealing the thunder from that other thread, in a nutshell, it was a terrible situation, two people very messed up. Enough said (literally).

Laws were originally decided by males... no WONDER someone would find a way to legally condone something this morally disgusting. :sad2:

Law or no law, the authority figure, in this case a parent, should be held accountable.

But what's wrong with Oprah having her in the show? :confused3 just wondering

It does feel like it's more popular to hate Oprah than to like her. I watch her after work because it's my unwind time. But DH is always so fond of joining me and jumping on the Oprah complaint wagon. I just feel like .... get in line with all the other Oprah haters and let me just watch the show.

I do feel like she's snotty, but who cares, I don't know her. I've learned a lot from her show. Some really practical things like info about stapf infections and some REALLY practical things like don't go see the movies she recommends!:laughing:

I admit it, I like Oprah and will ocassionally read something from her book club.

But one thing kind of bothers me, one day she had a saving money show with Suze Orman, and I watched it and thought it was ok. Sza was giving advice on how not to splurge on some things and to save your money, she even had a family on that was it debt because they lived beyond their means and were given advice on how to save money.

BUT the next day, Oprah has her show where she shows her favorite things and I am watching this, and while some of the things she showed didn't cost that much there were some items that cost a lot of money and they were luxeries.

What the heck are you talking about? The law doesn't condone anything. Ever. Laws make things illegal. The lack of a law doesn't "condone" something. The law is blind; that's by design.

A mother having consensual sex with her adult son is also not illegal.

Law or no law, the authority figure, in this case a parent, should be held accountable.
Stop talking in vagaries: "held accountable". What are you saying? Are you saying that there should be a law? If so, then say that.

My message said there wasn't a law. There isn't. I don't see a problem with having such a law. It sounds like a good idea to me. Since you seem especially interested in having a law, why don't you take that up as a project? Until a law is in place, your assertion that someone be "held accountable" is indefensible. We're not animals. We don't inflict justice based on emotion; we apply justice based on the law. Your assertion here seems to lead towards a slippery slope, perhaps justifying "holding someone accountable" (whatever that means) whenever they do something that you personally find objectionable.

I must be the cynical one on the boards. I think most celebrities aren't worth the time they are given.
I knew immediately when Mackenzie said she had a bomb shell it was going to be something stupid.
It's always some thing of that nature.

Dad sexually abuse them.
Sibling sexually abuse them.
BF/Husband abuse them.
co star sexually abuse them

Sorry, I'm sick of the "celebrity of the week" pooor me, my drug abuse/alcohol abuse was the cause of some "abuse" in my past. Gimme a break! I could have written that script. And excuse me why is there always the need to tell the rest of the world about it?

You know when I'll be impressed, the day Oprah has a celebrity on TV that says, "My mom & dad were absolutely fabulous, I had a normal Happy childhood and now I have a head full of wonderful memories".

I happen to agree with you, however, don't hold your breath about a normal celeb. Most of them will tell you that they almost don't exist, that is why they are in their chosen field. Something in their past drives them to seek fame and adoration from the masses. Not all of them but a good majority of them. Dr Drew even did a study of the phenominon of "Celebrity" and found a lot of them to have emotional problems, which contribute to a lot of the drug and alcohol abuse that we see. Fame and fortune didn't cause this, but something in their makeup and this is the same makeup that drives them to be in the spotlight.

Sorry for the typos haven't had coffee yet. lol

I dont hate her either, some of her show topics are good. And i think talking about incest might help other victims out there.

I said it on a thread the other day, Oprah is a has been. Her ratings are down and she needs to get them back up so it's back to her roots. Shock TV.

There was a good article in Newsweek at the beginning of Summer about her and her "medical" shows. The only doctor that the Newsweek article praised was Dr. Oz. Otherwise all of guests touting their latest discoveries were either wrong or even dangerous. They specifically stated Suzanne Summers and that Secret lady. They went on about how Oprah lets them go on and on about how wonderful their "cures" are and that even Oprah agrees with them and says how "she tried it and it changed her LIFE" yet never lets a medical professional give an opposing view of their radical and whacked out views.

:thumbsup2. 2 consenting adults = incest. I find it despicable but both parties are equally despicable. I don't watch Oprah, but wasn't she on there peddling her book, and in it she talks about the incest? What I would love to see happen, but know won't, is have all her proceeds from the book seized under the Son of Sam law. Incest is a crime, she wrote a book in which she speaks about her crime, therefore she can not profit from her crime. The fact she went onto Oprah and used the incest as a marketing ploy for the book makes me want it to happen even more.

I neither love nor hate Oprah, I'm Oprah agnostic. She is someone who puts on a show that is for ratings. I think anyone who thinks she does anything for any reason other than ratings is kidding themselves, but she is what she is.

I used to adore her, too, for many years, but she's changed. She's giving off serious "high horse" vibes in recent years. Sad for her; for someone who's so into improving ones self mentally, spiritually, and physically, she needs to do a self-assessment and will hopefully become that sincere person she used to be.

I had a friend to be on her show a few years ago and she was treated rude. She now hates the show and will not watch. She's not the nice lady she wants everyone to see. Very self-centered and just rude.

Same here. I had a former coworker be a guest on her show twice. She said she really didn't want to go on the 2nd time, but the Oprah people hounded and hounded and hounded her to the point of harrassement, so she gave in to get them off her back.

She said Oprah is very rude off camera and basically ignores the guests/audience until the camera starts rolling. She said she is not the person she appears to be when the camera is rolling and she can't stand her.

On the other hand, my hairdresser's friend is a producer on the show and says she is a very generous employer.

As I pointed out in the other thread, as much as many of us might wish it were a crime, incest, itself (between consenting adults), is not a crime, at least not a federal crime, and it is not a crime in all states. For example, it is not a crime in New Jersey, and Rhode Island actually repealed its laws against it.

Where it is not illegal, people who want it to be a crime should work towards that. Furthermore, people shouldn't project what they think should happen to people who engage in such activity until after they have successfully made it illegal.

I guess it is how you define celebrity. There are a lot of actors who lead very normal, low profile lives. You see them on tv every week and in tons of movies, but there are not the ones that would come to mind because they don't seek the spotlight. To them, acting is a job. They do their job and then go home to their families. The ones that you see all the time on shows like Access Hollywood and TMZ are the oddballs.

Huh, I thought it was illegal, I stand corrected. I retract my Son of Sam hope.

I stand by my Oprah assessment though.

To add some details: In Ohio, it is illegal to commit incest with a child, but it is not illegal to commit incest with a parent (yeah, I know that's a little strange, but the point is that the crime is committed by the parent, not the child), nor is it illegal to commit incest with a sibling or cousin. In Massachusetts, I believe all manner of incest is illegal. As I said, it's state by state.

I called in many years ago and got 2 tickets for my DH and his friend to go to her show when Michael Jordan was promoting Space Jam. DH said that she was a complete witch. She had her regulars that got priority seats regardless of what place in line they were. He said that her attitude stunk.

A few weeks later we took our DD's to a taping of The Bozo Show. DH made comments on how much better that was than going to Oprah! :lmao:

They even zoomed in our DD (she was about 3 at the time) sitting on DH's lap holding a stuffed Bozo that she had brought from home.

Not an Oprah fan here but I bet if Oprah knew there was a growing backlash against her (like I have seen over the last 2 years) she would probably be the type of person to be humble enough to re-evaluate her arrogance and take a step back. I think she is very genuine.

Early in her career it seemed to me that she was somewhat of a religious person. She would refer to a higher being (even referring to God), prayer and presented herself as a Christian. In the last few years I have noticed that she is all about reaching a higher level of understanding, maximizing yourself, looking within etc..no more references to God.

I wonder if she is a closeted Scientologist. I find it peculiar that all the big name Scientologist flock to her show in preference to others. Some that appear on her show don't even do the circuit of other shows. She seems to be invited to all their big personal events, in the inner circle. Anyone else get this vibe from her?:confused3

I don't enjoy her shows anymore and don't watch her.

I agree with you. :thumbsup2

I wonder if she is a closeted Scientologist.

I have no info to back it up, but I've read that this was a rumor. I wouldn't be surprised...she seems to get majorly excited about a way of life and then go on to abandon it to get majorly excited about another way of life. I guess she's a seeker at heart.

Never cared for Oprah myself.....she seems to be stuck on herself to me. Look how she sits there all high and mighty all the time. "AND SO....." irritates the heck out of me too. Let the person talk already, your royal hieness :headache:

I do watch when someone interesting is on though, not for harpo backwards, herself!:rotfl:

Watched MP yesterday. I believe her because what embarrassment/shame from admitting consensual incest:crazy2: publicly. I can see why all the drug use.

I hope she finds peace and that speaking out is theraputic for her.
