Another reason retail is down: The clothes are UGLY!!!

missy pie -what kind of shoes do your girls wear when they dress up?
Mine won't wear hose anymore. Some shoes however seem to need something.
Do they go bare legged all year round?

Basically, yes. Yesterday I did talk the 13 year old out of the white leggings with white flip flops and into the black leggings with black shoes.

Ugg boots are big around us, and now I'm used to seeing them with dresses.

DD11 has a band concert coming up the first week in December and they have to wear dress/church clothes. Went out this weekend and could NOT find ANYTHING appropriate or pretty to wear. She is in between the kids' and the junior dept. sizes. Last spring at Kohl's I found her some pretty dresses, but ugh, nothing for winter!
I've tried Kohl's, Macy's, JC Penny's, Limited Too, Aeropostale, and nothing!!!
Our culture has definately gone to a mostly casual stye and it is hard to find more classic dress clothes.

OP, I'm SO with you!

Anyone have any suggestions?

I am in the same boat as you! I took by 11 year old shopping this weekend and found nothing in the junior's section or the girl's department! Like it wasn't fun enough shopping with a hormonal 11 year old, trying to find something we both agreed on was horrible!

I ended up looking online and found www.girlsdressshop.com. They have sizes up to 16, so I am hoping that it will fit her. Some of the dresses were "too little girl" according to my daugher, but we did find one that she liked so I am hoping it fits!

Good luck to everyone!

I went shopping over the weekend for my DGD who is 4 and my due any day DGD. I like babies to look like babies and little girls to look like little girls. We are also in SE PA so it can get a little cold here in the winter. The colors for babies are horrible and my 4 y/o DGD is now in little girl sizes. The clothes are perfect if she is walking the streets and wants to freeze to death. I am very lucky that my mom is still around and sews. She makes the greatest clothes for the girls and at a fraction of the cost. DGD loves all the pretty jumpers and dresses as she loves getting dressed up.
I have to admit that I have the same problem for the 2 toddler DGS's. They are little for such a short period of time and I like them to look like little boys. Fortunately it is sometimes easier to find them clothes.

I can't find anything for myself either.

It's frustrating.

We are invited to two Christmas parties on the same night: office and Sunday School. I chose Sunday School because I know that I can wear something I aleady have for that one, but would have to buy an expensive new dress and shoes for the other one.

I used to work retail and I thought the same thing, some seasons the clothes were just ugly. And for me, either something my grandmother would wear or a super skinny teenager.

I need something for me, and most of the women out there. I swear, if it wasn't for needing money, the talent, people, and actually everything else, I would definitely create my own clothing line.

Have to agree OP....the clothes out there are awful for girls/women.

My dd's and I will stroll thru the guys clothes and shake our heads. Why do they get the option of just plain practical clothes and we don't.

I've been trying to buy some winter clothes for my daughters. First let me say that even though we're in Texas, long sleeves can be necessary. I can't tell you how many stores only have Ts and cammies. And it's IMPOSSIBLE to find church dresses or skirts. 98% of the dresses are "party" (sequins, spaghetti straps, etc.) But basically the clothes in the stores are flat out ugly this year....it's easy to save money and not buy because we've gone into all of their regular stores and the girls don't even want anything.

ITA!!! :thumbsup2

All fall I have been looking for some new clothes for work. I have been to every department/mall store with cash in hand to spend - and I never find anything. The clothes that are in fashion are either way too ugly to me, to dressy, or everything is short sleeves (I live up North). It seems that when I do find something I like and try on, it either fits terribly or the construction is so terrible, it's still not worth the price even at 50% off. :sad2:

I want a brown, around the knee length, pencil skirt. Gray would be nice, too. Why doesn't this exist? You'd never see a guy posting, "I need a pair of gray dress slacks and they just don't exist."

I am going through this trying to find cute and pretty clothes in size 7. Ther is nothing in the stores I will buy.
I have found stuff in those same stores on-line.
I turned to ebay and found tons of cute and pretty in her size!

Agree it is a joke. My 17yodd has bought stuff out of the guys dept., like PJ's and sweats.

Me too.
The other problem is that most of the tops are designed to emphasize the chest area. I do NOT want to emphasize the chest. I don't want the equivalent of a big neon sign pointing to the girls saying, "LOOK HERE NOW!" I don't want it in my personal life and I sure don't want it at work.

I look pregnant in the empire waist type tops (of which there are many).

I've always had problems with finding clothes. Then again, at 4'7", they don't make anything to fit me.

For the last few years, I cannot find a pair of navy blue dress pants.

Now I can't even find something to wear with the one last pair of navy pants I do have. All I have is short sleeve stuff and nothing for winter. I also need something to wear with my brown pants.

They also have a much wider choice of sizes. In pants, they don't have just small, medium and large. They actually can shop by their leg lengths and waist size. I want that option.
Not all women who would wear a 12 are they same height.

One of my friends needed to replace her trusty navy blue heels and was told that navy is "out." So you may not find the slacks for a while....(How can navy be "out" for women when it's never "out" for men?!)

I will say that it's a pleasure dressing my son. Since he's a senior in HS, I wanted to make sure he has all the "right" clothes for interviews, banquets, etc. He has:
a dark suit
a nice navy blazer
khaki slacks
gray slacks
button down shirts
polo shirts
(then jeans and ts)
He is truly "set" for church, interviews or whatever comes up and it was EASY to find the clothes!!!!!

Yeah. Evidently it's been "out" for several years. But, I have not had problems finding the color in khaki style pants. Just dress pants. :confused3

Agreed, and not just this year and not just for kids! Same, IMO, goes for purses and shoes. I feel like we're all supposed to be dressing and accessorizing for the Love Boat in the 70s, and I cannot wait for a more minimal look to come back!

I went to San Diego for Madonna with a group of women around my age (late 30s), and I swear they were ALL wearing polyester, swirly patterned tops with beads, sequins, or strange button type things...it was horrid. And everyone else was dressed the same!
