Another pit bull attack, link inside....

Pit bull or ShizTzu, it doesn't matter.
It is the homeowner's responsibilty to ensure that the gate could not be opened.

I would rather take my chances with a ShizTzu!

And I think that's bs. Children should be taught to keep their hands to themselves. More than 50% responsibility lies with the children in the situation IMO. In fact I'd say their resposibility is very close to 100%.

This type of agruement really ticks me off. I used to have a dog that was very, very, very cat aggressive. I installed a 6ft picket fence to contain said dog. Several of our neighbors allowed their cats to roam the neighborhood. I was concerned about cats getting INTO my yard so I called our township and was told that I would likely be sued if a cat wandered (climbed my fence)into my yard and was ripped to shreds by my dog.

The way I see it is that we need to grow some common sense.

True, but think of how many dogs would have just run out to play or even lick the kids when that gate was opened. But THIS one's instinct was to attack.

As for that tired old, "Dogs aren't the problem. The owners are," line.....Well, the owners do partially share the blame. But it's not the owners whose teeth sink into your flesh, is it? :rolleyes1

Doesn't matter. The dog was not a risk to the children until the gate was opened.

Plenty of dogs are more aggressive in their open territory. My dogs act like fools when they're in their yard and see another dog. On walk, they act completely normal.

The dogs was in a fenced in property and a stranger went in..

The blame 100% falls on the kid here..

If it was my 9 year old, I would be upset for sure, but I could not blame the owners.. It would be my son's fault for going where he should not have gone..

No excuses but in this case it was reported that the dog was repeatedly taunted.

Mikeeee

AND - Did you watch the video? The boy stated they were playing ball and the ball went into the Pit's yard - so they in turn attempted to open the gate to get the ball.

AND - with all the talk of how vicious pits are - that dog could have done much more severe damage to him. He didnt . That was a 'get the heck out of my yard' bite. WHICH JUST ABOUT ANY dog would do.

Have fun debating my breed again.

They're never vicious until they bite someone. Of course, you know that it wasn't the poor doggie's fault, right? :rolleyes1

I'm glad that little boy will be OK.

Yes and absoutely no blame should be held by the kids that were taunting the dog, trespassing, opening a gate to release a fenced dog.

kids go and retrieve balls. i did as a kid, and most of you did as kids. so, i really dont blame the kid here. he did what any kid would do. if every kid that ever kicked, or hit a ball into another yard just left it, no kid would have any balls to play with. and that my friends would be the real tragedy, for a world without balls is like a day without sunshine.

Are you joking? My kids wouldnt have done this. This isnt a case of wandering into someone's yard - they opened a gate. :confused3 This isnt a 5 year old - these kids are old enough to know better (at least one of them was) then to be opening someones gate.

How come this wasnt linked this week??? Its much worse then this current article: http://www.mercurynews.com/breakingnews/ci_9414854

I didn't, I was taught that if I kicked a ball in someone else's yard, I went and knocked on the door and asked for it back, my kids were taught the same thing. Trespassing is illegal, regardless of reasoning.

Funny, I was taught the same thing.

I can't believe I am getting myself into this again. I agree that this child should not have gone into the yard. I agree the kids should not have taunted him.

But I will absolutely not excuse a dog from biting someone just because they came into their yard. That dog's first response was not a bark, not a growl, not intimidation, not a nip at the heels - it was a bite to the face. That is not what just about any dog would do. That is what pits do, and that is why they are so dangerous.

And I will not be thankful that a dog chose not to kill the kid instead of biting his face, causing wounds that are likely to become infected, and to cause scars that will last a lifetime. Unbelievable.

actually i am not kidding. maybe your kids wouldnt, but i and every kid i know, has climbed fences, opened gates, climbed trees in other peoples yards, in order to get balls. that is what kids do.

My kids and the children of the many parents we know, would NOT do that. They know i is wrong to enter a fenced in area for this and other reasons..

Were you there? Did you see that this didnt occur??? The bite on his face is no where NEAR an attack - you have said it yoruself. Theyre much more powerful then that. How do you know this dog DIDNT give warnings???

"The recent vicious attack is the second such case documented in Fremont in less than a year.

In September, a 32-year-old mother suffered wounds to both arms when she was mauled by a neighbor's pit bull that was trying to attack the woman's 4-month-old son.

That dog, which also was involved in another attack the same day, was euthanized about a week and a half after the Sept. 4 incident.

The dog's owners were charged with multiple felonies, including failing to protect the public from a dangerous dog. They are set to face preliminary examination this summer."

CR - this was at the bottom of the article you just linked to. What did the 4 month old do to taunt that pit?

maybe you all should get to know your neighbors better. because if you cant go into your neighbors yard to retrieve a ball, and you actually are bringing the word trespassing into it, all i can say is wow.

That article had already been linked here previously. :)

Wanna talk about the boxer - or do Pit incidents only interest you.

This whole informing the world how terrible Pits are, is getting boring.

And I could say the same, if you don't respect your nieghbor's private property enough to feel it is fine to hop their fence then all I can say is WOW.

Growing up we knew our neighbors very well. We still didn't go in their yards without asking anymore than we didn't enter their homes without being invited. My parents didn't always succeed but they did try to teach us manners.

Huh... Parents need to teach their children boundries. I can't believe anyone would think it is ok to trespass. Say wow all you want, but going onto someone elses property is trespassing, no matter how well you know the owners.
