Another packing question....

I am a zip-lock within a zip-lock packer for all my liquid toiletries and always carry an extra bag so if I have a leak within the inside bag, it is discarded and replaced. When flying (and the liquids with volume need to be within your checked bags) I find it important to get out the extra air or your zip-lock may be likely to pop open.

Lately though with tighter weight restrictions (or buying more while away maybe ) we'll buy much of our consumable toiletries after arriving in FLA and discard before our return to avoid the weight penalty and having to deal with while flying.

i couldn't carry the size liquids i need for more than 3 days on a plane. i put liquids in zip locks inside my luggage, we have hard sided luggage. i haven't had anything leak, although we've come back specifically from DCL vacations with broken luggage (handles, zippers, cracks). i would check all that and we rely somewhat on the room toiletries (love the shampoo, need stronger conditioner etc..)

I am amazed when some reply "I like soft sides, because I can overstuff them!!! I have had one Samsonite Oyster 29" Hardside with rollers that is my go to bag for long trips. With soft side luggage, you have minimal protection from impact, and liquids will find there way through soft side and zippered luggage.

You would have no problem in a good Hardside bag with sealing against liquids, ever look out the window at an airport and thought "wow that luggage is really getting wet"?

I seecond this. In the past I have traveled with soft-side luggage, and we still have some at home but they are never used now. We now have hardside luggage for checked luggage, and a small hardside for carry-on, as well as some soft bags (not "luggage") for carryon.

I have seen and had luggage sit on the tarmac in torrential downpours -- softside got soaked through, hardside was fine, even around the zippers (I was hesitant to get hardside luggage with zippers, but after some investigating was satisfied with the design ours uses, and it has stood up well). I have had softside luggage that obviously had some kind of icky oily liquid spilt on it, as it stained part of the bag -- and I was not able to remove it; fortunately it did not leak through. Hardside luggage I have had come to me with sticky substances on them, but it just wipes off, with or without a bit of elbow grease.

I have also seen softside luggage get dropped etc. While hardside luggage can also be damaged by this, some of the newer well-designed bags can withstand quite a bit of external force before they would fail. And until the point of failure they do a better job of protecting their contents from the same external forces.

We are driving....

On our last cruise I packed all our liquids (shampoo, conditioner, sunscreen, lotions, drinks, etc...), medicine and valuables in our 1 carry on bag. To say the least it was heavy. Well this time I got a carry on bag with wheels. My question is how many of you put your liquid items in your luggage? I didn't want to risk any of it spilling out on our clothes but I would like to avoid carrying any more than I had to. I know I have to keep the drinks with me so I am mainly asking for the bathroom and personal items.

I have most toiletries in carryon. That consists of our 3 311 baggies filled with decanted 100ml bottles of sunscreen and mascara. If it's a Disney cruise I don't bother with shampoo/conditioner as I like Disney's brand. But I have my hair goop in the baggies. I have zero interest in that stuff going missing, which is why I carry it on. I do tend to fly with big bottles of sunscreen (ziptopped) in checked luggage. But if I'm at WDW/Uni already I'll just put those in carryon. We have yet to get off a plane and go immediately to a cruise.


Noticed your first sentence. If I were driving I would carry it on. Not sure how it's done in PC but we saw the precarious method of getting bags onto a Disney ship in Vancouver, and there's the possibility of the bag going into the water. So I carry on fancy clothes, running clothes, liquids.

I want to carry-on my toiletries along with meds. I have a special toiletries bag that has a strap that fits over the handle of a suitcase. Can I take that and my carry-on suitcase or is there a limit of the amount you can carry on? My carry-on suitcase will be full of Dt. Mtn dew (my husband is addicted) and a few bottles of water and pre-packaged snacks I know my toddler will eat.

There isn't a limit to the number of carry ons, or at least not a limit that they enforce. The main limits are that the bags have to fit through a standard security scanner like they have at airports and you have to drag your carry ons along with you until your stateroom is ready, which is around 1:30pm. You will be fine with your toiletries bag.

I've never put toiletry type liquids in my carry-on and never had one burst *knock on wood* Even drinks (water, soda, and alcohol) has traveled fine on the plane (yes - I know these are carryon for ship process). I usually double ziploc bag everything and ensure it's in the middle of the luggage so that our clothes pad it as well. If it's something that I think is at higher risk of spilling or that I want protected, I use plastic containers (like tupperware) inside my suitcase. I try to carry on as little as possible...
