I just about FREAKED when we priced a UHaul online for our possible move from NH to Fla. $4,000???????

Apparently, the rental truck companies, Ryder, UHaul, Penske, etc. charge a MINIMUM of 6 days from NH to FL and do not refund for early returns.

Has anyone else done a long distance move lately? We were not at all planning on $4,000 just to MOVE our stuff.

I'm hoping I can count on my DIS connections for suggestions. We are moving SOME but not all of the furniture from a 2BR apartment hopefully at the end of the summer.

Holly--Try ABF (Trucking/Freight company) They have a program where they will drop off a container, you pack it, they haul it. (To prevent their trucks/drivers making trips with nothing to haul.

**Or....just sell it all, and buy new stuff ;)

Thanks, Debster! It sounds great. Are they trustworthy?

We're planning on ditching/selling a lot of our stuff, but there's still quite a bit we need to take with us. We're going to buy a new living room set, but are taking our brand new coffee table and our entertainment center, we are buying a new bedroom set, but have to take our 1 year old, top of the line mattress, and all of our office furniture. We're going to ditch most of the dining room furniture as well. It still leaves us with quite a bit to bring. I'd LOVE to not have to do the driving, that way we can each drive our own cars.

Thanks for the tip.

ABF is a fairly large, very reputable trucking company. My company uses them quite a bit, for deliveries, and receivings. I would have NO qualms about using them

Hi Holly,

Good luck with the move. Ouch, way tooo much money.

Did you try budget.com?

Debster, Thanks again for the info.

Herc, I haven't tried budget, but I will now. Thanks!

Holy Cow!! What size truck are you renting???? We recently moved a relative from Michigan to Virginia (about 600 miles) and used Penske. We booked the 15 foot truck. Originally we had booked it for $469 + taxes & insurance. Then we canceled, thinking Uhaul's truck would give us more room for the same price. After looking at the local Uhaul trucks and worrying that they wouldn't make it to the state line without breaking down, we rebooked Penske. Amazingly, the price had dropped to $228!! The prices change constantly due to supply and demand. We were extremely happy with Penske. The truck quality and service is outstanding.

I just reread your post and saw that you are moving a 2 bedroom apartment. My relative was moving a 2 bedroom house and we fit EVERYTHING into the 15' Penske. We were even able to fit my grandmother's china cabinet in the truck (which was going to my house), too. I've found that the secret is in the packing. Watch the free videos on the Uhaul website for tips and play a lot of Tetris (computer game that makes you fit shaped tightly together).

we moved from Md to Fl in a Uhall, It was much more expensive on the online site, contact the local dealers (more than one) you should get a much better $ ours was cut in half. It is more costly to move to Fla than most other states because there is higher demand to than from.and because it is the "end of the line'.

good luck and call around to get the best value.
