Another Mobile Phone Question

Could someone help me please.

My Uk mobile does not have triband and I dont want to change it.

I have thought about buying a US mobile phone, in say Walmart, just for use over there - for emergencies or to call home.

Is this a good idea? Do they have pay-as-you-go mobiles over there, would I need a triband to phone back to the Uk? Would I still be charged for receiving UK calls as I would if I took a UK phone??

thanks

Linda :paw:

Hi Linda

Yes there are PAYG phones over there, we have a tracfone which we use only when we're in FL.
This allows us to recieve phone calls from the UK and also we can make phone calls back to the UK but we have to use a prepaid phone card to do this.
More info can be found Here
You can buy tracfone's and airtime from Walmart.

Thats what we use :) Very handy to have :) we both have triband phones but we never take our phones with us ( they are both work phones and we dont want work phoning when we are on holiday :teeth: )... So we decided to get a cheap phone while we was over there for those little emergencies.

A few months back Target were doing the T-Mobile cheapie Nokia phone for $49-99, this comes with $15 in airtime credit. PAYG with vouchers available from many places. The more you spend on your topup the longer it lasts, until you've topped up a total of $100 and then they last for one year.

Also available is the Virgin Mobile USA, another PAYG with vouchers available in plenty of places (this is CDMA on the sprint network).

We have a Virgin phone, from a while ago, that I use when I travel to the USA on business. I've now purchased a T-Mobile phone to use for our trip in October, so that we can have a phone each, in case we decide to do different things.

The US phone market is a few years behind that in the UK. PAYG is only just getting established.

:) Chris.
