My friend's daughter has another math problem, which I thought I had figured out but I didnt'... :scratchin Here is the problem...

THE LEFTOVER PROBLEM:

After the Christmas party, there are exactly eight pints of eggnog left in a large punch bowl. The hosts, Abbie, and Sam, want to split this evenly between them. The punch bowl belongs to Sam, who also has an empty, UNMARKED container that holds exactly three pints. Abbie has an empty, UNMARKED container that holds exactly five pints.

Explain how these two friends can evenly split the eggnog between them. Remember, their containers are unmarked, so they can't directly measure volume, but they can obviously tell when a container is full. HINT: Neither person knows how much their container holds... (this is the part that I did not read into it.)

Also, if anyone worries about helping with these problems, she is allowed to ask for help as these are advanced problems for her math class... She does not get penalized for getting help... It is her teacher's way of involving parents and relatives in their children's schoolwork... :thumbsup2

mark fills his conainer and drinks 3 pints then adds another pint and abbie fills her container with the 4 pints so everyone is happy with 4 pints of eggnog. they went home and puked afterwards i bet xD chugging 4 pints :happytv:

Try this........

Using a 5 and a 3 litter containers, first the punch in 3 litter
container is poured to empty container#1.From 5 litter container pour
3 litters to the 3 litter container and pour it to container #1.
There are 2 liters left in the 5 litter container. The 2 litters in
the 5 litter container is poured to empty container#2.In container#1
now holds 6 litters and then pour to the empty 5 litter container. In
container#1 now contains 1 litter. Next, from the five litters in the
five litter container pour 3 into the 3 litter container. Finally the
three litters in the three litter container is poured to container#1.
This is how and is the answer to measure the exact 4 litters needed.

THAT IS ALL I CAN SAY

I believe this was in one of the Die Hard movies......

Take some measuring cups and perform the same task--any assistance you get pretty much is the answer to the problem.

Here's the answer:

Punch bowl 5pt container 3pt container
8 pints 0 pints 0 pnts

pour from punchbowl into 5pt
3 pints 5 pints 0 pints

pour from 5pt to 3pt
3pints 2 pints 3 pints

pour from 3pt to punch bowl
6 pints 2 pints 0 pints

pour from 5pt to 3pt
6 pints 0 pints 2 pints

pour from punchbowl to 5 pts
1 pints 5 pints 2 pints

pour from 5 pts to 3 pts
1pints 4 pints 3 pints

pour from 3 pnts to punchbowl
4 pints 4 pints 0 pints

Sam takes the punchbowl

My DH Says this...LOL..NOt sure is this is same as Lampy

fill the 5 liter to top

pour from the 5 into the 3 untli 3 is full which leaves 2 in the 5

then pour the full 3 back into the big

and pour the remaining 2 into the 3

do again, same thing, and pour back into the 5 twice which will give 2 x 2liters which is 4

the remaining will obviously be 4

:confused3 :confused3 :confused3

Momisita....just an answer to the age old question on how to split a miller lite....Willie and I figured it out on CC in 04!

Thanks for all the help... That is exactly how I solved it but the teacher refused it from the student because she said neither person knows how much their container holds, so how would they know it is 4 pints? My question was why would they care then?:lmao:

This will only work if both containers are a regular cylindrical/rectangular shape (ie drinking glass, bucket etc.) Fill both containers to the top, all 8 pints of remaining egg nog should now be out of the punch bowl. Take the smaller container, tip it on a diagonal over top of the punch bowl until the fluid level goes from the the bottom rim to the top rim (see picture.)

Exactly half the container's contents will spill out into the punch bowl. Do the same with the large container. The punch bowl now contains exactly 1/2 the egg nog which we know to be 4 pints. Dump the remaining contents of the small container (1.5 pints) into the larger container (2.5 pints) for a total of 4 pints. Of course the owner of the small container will have to take home her leftovers in the punch bowl because her smaller container is not big enough to hold her half. Now dump all of the eggnog down the drain cause egg nog is gross.
