Another live trip report...

We'll see how bleary we are on Friday; we're all getting up very early to support Mrs Groucho running the 5k that morning... and the kids running their races later that morning. My "official" plans are MK after that they maybe EMH at Epcot 'til midnight, but I may drop before then! :)

Good luck to Mrs. Groucho and the youngest Groucho's!

My plan at the moment is MK on Friday so maybe we'll run into each other there. I'll be the one with the Sony on a Black Rapid strap. :goodvibes

OK. :) That reminds me, I haven't posted my unofficial DSLR report yet.
Day 2: just Canikons
Day 3: 1 Pentax, then 3-4 Sonys (I think one was FF)
Day 4: 3-4 Sonys
Day 5: 2 Sonys
Total BlackRapid sightings other than Mrs' and mine: ONE
Total Op/Tech sightings: ZERO

Sonys seem to be in solidly third place at WDW at the moment. The vast majority of DSLRs are entry-levels with kit or entry-level long zooms/all-in-ones (but there's a ton of them.) Only a couple so far with external flashes. One D3, maybe a few Canikon FFs. I don't think I've seen any "giant" lenses, ie 70-200mm F2.8s or more, even at AK - but then, we never made it onto Safaris or the walking animal tours yesterday. So far, only 2-3 comments on Mrs' red K-x, but 2 were within a few minutes of each other, kind of funny.

Of course, some of the DSLR report depends on those OEM straps that tell you what the model is. Those seem a little funny to me - you can show off when your camera is new and shiny, but after a couple years, they just tell everyone that you're using that old model. :) I think Canikon are the primary ones who do that; Pentax stopped several years ago and I think Sony and Olympus don't...? The name on the strap is how I spotted the one Pentax; I've probably seen others and maybe some Olys but haven't noticed the brand. And that ends the DSLR report!

A couple more shots for this morning - a girl playing with her phone while riding Soarin'. People really love their cells, how did they survive for years without them?

One thing I've been trying to get decent shots of is the inferno barge in Illuminations. Unfortunately, in the dark, I didn't realize that our view was partly blocked (we were just past Mexico.) I've got a ton of shots of it; here's one that caught my eye upon a quick flip through them.

Thanks!

To get caught up...
Day 4: A somewhat late start to Hollywood Studios. Breakfast at Starring Rolls; it's no Main St Bakery but it's pretty good. Next, Toy Story, fairly long wait but we weren't spending the whole day so fastpasses were not an option. I got what I think is my high, but I know that I can do better! 191,700. By now, we were already late for our 50s Prime Time reservation. That's one of my favorite restaurants on propery; great food and lots of fun. After that, a show that's been pretty much ignored by the Photo Board - Playhouse Disney Live on Stage. :) This was my first time seeing it; usually Mrs Groucho takes the kid(s) while I wander around One Man's Dream. It's fine for what it is, and is more or less tolerable.

Since this was supposed to be probably the warmest day of our trip, we went back to our hotel to check out the swimming facilities. Unfortunately, Leila was overdue for a nap and Mrs was a little tired too, so they napped while Jack and I headed out. The pool is very nice (easily beats the main AKL one, from what I saw of that one), with a pretty tall slide, zero entry area, etc. Not very deep though. The kid's water play area is the real star though; very big, very imaginative, and very fun. If you have kids and are staying at AKL, definitely check it out. Finally the women arrived to join us, but by then it was getting towards dusk and cooling off fast... then it started raining, too!

We regrouped and hopped on a bus to Downtown Disney, grabbing dinner at Earl of Sandwich. Good stuff. We did some store wandering and grabbed sundaes at Ghiradelli's. It's too bad that that place doesn't offer smaller sundaes - we weren't exactly starved and probably half of the sundaes got wasted. Which brings us to...

Day 5. Animal Kingdom. Since AK is not exactly brimming with breakfast options, we decided to stop at Jambo House (the main AKL building)... and we ended up at Boma. Mmmmm, Boma! Funnily enough, our server hailed from Rochester and had actually put a deposit on a house about a half-mile form ours, but was not able to sell his Florida house. We went to the park and the guy at the turnstile was also from Rochester, here on the college program. Coincidences abound!

Crowd levels were pretty high. We caught Festival of the Lion King and It's Tough To Be a Bug, before the rest of the family went to the Boneyard (the kid's playground) and I headed for Dinosaur... then stopped when I saw that it had an 80 minute wait! I'm used to it nearly being a walk-on! Instead, I made a beeline for the single rider line at Everest. Let's see... no smoke around the peak... a static yeti with a strobe on him... and now, not even the puff of steam from the engine when it stops in the load zone. All that work on the effects and they're not even working... kind of sad. Still, what a great ride!

I met up with the family and after the usual potty and diaper breaks, we ate at Restaurantosaurus. We've always ignored this in the past since it used to be just McDonalds, but we will probably go back again. The theming is really terrific. I also had one of the new 1/3rd lb angus burgers - I had noticed that the buns looked different, but some quick research shows that these are really new - like maybe less than a month old. The buns look great but are thicker than I like - my favorite is a nice soft wheat bun, these are more like rolls. The beef itself is OK. Overall, the burger is decent enough but not astonishing... but certainly an improvement over the old burgers. Knowing now how new it is, maybe I'll have to take a pic next time I get one.

We then went to Finding Nemo, after which the park was switching to EMH mode so there wasn't much left. We rode the Dumbo clone then Primeval Whirl, which Jack was just barely tall enough for. As we were about to do the child swap so Jack could ride, my wife realized that her new Minnie jacket, which was in or on the stroller, had disappeared. After some anxious moments waiting for Disney Security, it turned out that it (and Leila's sweatshirt) had fallen off or out of the stroller and that they were found, so we got them back. Phew! While they were on (which takes a while, even with fastpasses - it's extremely slow-loading especially for a constantly-loading ride), Leila was content just long enough for me to get one single tripod shot, then she needed more attention. We all went to Everest at this point. It was starting to sprinkle but was still running. The single-rider line was closed so I went through the queue.. and when I was done, Jack had had a change of heart. He had no interest in riding it - too scary! He did the Dinosaur ride last trip but doesn't want to ride it again. But this time, despite it being very dark out, he decided that he wanted to ride it, as long as I protected him when we saw the yeti. Well, sure enough, we went on and he had a good time though he was scared a little, but he says that he will ride it again. Yay! Three Everest rides in fairly short succession were starting to have an effect on my not-as-tough-as-it-used-to-be stomach so it was getting time to go! In fact, we were pretty much trailed out by the park sweepers.

That brings us to today...which has been a mixed bag... definitely not the best day we've ever had. Today was the day to pick up the marathon packets, which didn't open until 10. We ate at the quick-service spot in Jambo House, then followed the paperwork's direction, which told us to go to DHS then hop on a bus to Wide World of Sports. But oh no, that wasn't what we were supposed to do. There are dedicated buses at each resort. It was suggested that we hop on a Pop Century bus then grab the marathon bus then... which we did. (As a side note - despite other complaints, we really had pretty great timing with buses today.) We get there and wander around for a couple minutes then go to get the packets. This is inside the "HP Field House"... which requires all sorts of round-about walking just to get through. We get the packets for everyone, then head over to the Josten's Center, which is the main Heath and Fitness Expo and marathon/RunDisney merchandise. Well, they must have been trying to warm up the runners as the place was blazingly hot! Today was supposed to be relatively cool and have thunderstorms, so we'd pretty warm, too. (It ended up being very hot in the morning with clear blue skies, but did cool down in the afternoon, but no sign of rain at all.)

By the time we were finished there, all four of us were overheated and cranky. We headed to DHS via Pop Century again, and were faced with pretty huge crowds. At one point, Toy Story Mania was up to a 160 minute wait time! We didn't even try going near it. We watched Beauty and the Beast then rode Great Movie Ride, in the last row of a two-car train. I'm not sure if I've seen it with two vehicles in the same place at once...

After that, it was MuppetVision. It's great that this was done while Jim was still alive - Brian seems to be getting better but his Kermit still just doesn't sound quite right. I love this yet I can't stand Bean Bunny or the wretched Waldo, "spirit of 3, D!"... I can only imagine how much I'd like it if it didn't have them!

At this point, we had to choose between going through some of the animation area thing (One Man's Dream, etc) or Fantasmic. There were two showings and I wasn't sure which one we'd try... it was 5:10 and the first show was 6:30. I remembered a year or two ago, getting there 45-60 minutes early and it was standing room only already, and I was fairly miserable. So, we decided to check Fantasmic and if the crowds were awful, we'd skip and try the 8:00 show. This was definitely the right decision as the show was far from full; in fact we got a seat in the center-ring maybe 5 rows back from the front. Jack, who had been whiny all day, was miserable now - apparently one of his ears was really hurting and he "didn't want to be here"... probably another ear infection. Well, we toughed it out and had a fairly smooth wait and another fun performance. Afterward, the park had another hour or so, but being 5k day tomorrow, we decided to all make it an early evening. Did I mention that Mrs was now concerned about a very sore throat she started having? She thinks that she's getting a cold... and Jack probably has an ear infection... they'll be in great shape for the runs. :(

I stopped by Mara, the quick-service at AKL, while the rest went straight to our room to get some medicine in Jack. Now everyone's conked out and I'm heading there myself, and that gets us current!

Now, a couple more shots from day 3.

I love that fisheye Osborne shot!

Sorry your wife is getting a sort throat. I hope everyone is ready to run!

I just got the call from Mrs Groucho that she finished the 5k. Yay! She still feels like she's got a cold but she sounded pretty good. I forgot to mention, they messed up her info packet and it was marked as hers but her someone else's racing bib (ie, name and number) on it! Lots of thing were going wrong yesterday, it seemed like.

We had planned to go to meet her at the finish line... but Jack is feeling terrible. Last night, there was a lot of whimpering and we ended up taking turns sleeping in his bed to keep him company. We woke up a little before 5 and he was up and wanted to see Mommy race but he wanted to stay sleeping more. We decided it was best to let him stay sleeping. I'm going to call his doctor as soon as they open and see if we can get an antibiotic prescription and find a local place to either deliver it or take a taxi over and pick it up. Sigh... I think we were feeling lucky after no one getting sick the last couple trips and haven't been using hand sanitizer and/or washing our hands before every time we eat. Most times, yes, but not every time...

I'm still feeling pretty decent, hopefully I can stay that way. My stomach was a little "off" after the Everest rides and it continued on through the night and some of the following day (longer than it would for just motion sickness), but I think that's passed. I'm still hoping to come through this healthy!

At this point, the kids are sleeping and I'm waiting for Mrs to make her way back here. The kids' runs are at 11, I really hope Jack will feel better and/or be distracted enough to forget about his ear. He's been really excited about his race, and even wanted to "practice" running at one point yesterday. :)

If you need it, there is an immediate care center near DTD with an attached pharmacy. They will come pick you up and return you to the resort (at least that service was offered in Dec. 2008). When I got sick in 08 they were very good. The pharmacy didn't accept insurance, but you can submit it for reimbursement when you return home. The resort front desk personnel helped us. Good luck staying healthy!

YEAH to Mrs. Groucho for finishing the 5K! My son is a runner, but not a huge Disney fan, so no trips to the Disney marathon for us. I suppose I could take up running and go, but why do something crazy? :scared1:

I hope you can maybe get an Rx phoned in for Jack to make things as simple as possible. My daughter had ear infections all the time, so I know how tough it is on everyone when you travel. It's a great idea to get him on something now or the ear is likely to give him even more trouble on the plane ride home.

And if the pain persists with pain med, did you know you can dose both ibuprofen and acetaminophen concurrently? They work in different ways and together can be much more effective at pain relief than either alone. I used to rep for Tylenol in a prior life.......

I think it's just the age of your kids. It seems the young ones are just always catching something. It's only been the last year or so that we have stopped getting every little thing going around, and my youngest is 10!

Also, if you have a credit card attached to your room key, they will deliver to your hotel and the hotel will pay for it and bill you later.

Thanks for the tips, guys! I've spoken to his doctor's office back home and they're going to call in a prescription to Turner Drug, who will deliver it to the resort (for all of a $5 fee!), charge it to our room, and we don't even need to be here to accept it. Great deal.

Current plan is baths for everyone, off to the kids' races, then back here to pick up the medication. (Just got a call from Turner about the price - not cheap but we should be able to file with insurance when we get back. Jack needs it, so it's worth it!) Then off to Magic Kingdom and maybe a solo Epcot EMH trip tonight. Leila seems to be feeling great, so that's good at least...

Leila is currently dancing to "Hot Dog", as Mickey Mouse Clubhouse is on TV. She's taken a real liking to Mickey Mouse over the past few months, and calls him "Mow Mow". I thought she was just mangling his name, but then she started calling Pluto "dog dog" and Donald "duck duck", so I guess it's her version of "mouse mouse". :lmao: She has been ratcheting up the cute level a lot recently, and gleefully says "HI!!!" to everyone she sees. Ever during the Beauty and the Beast show, she was saying "HI!" to all the people as they came out on stage. :)

I feel for Jack -- I used to get the most terrible earaches when I was a kid; sometimes I'd just lie in the bed and cry. Thank God I stopped getting them when I turned 10 or so ...

After that, it was MuppetVision. It's great that this was done while Jim was still alive - Brian seems to be getting better but his Kermit still just doesn't sound quite right.
I'm guessing you're referring to Brian Henson, but Steve Whitmire is the Muppet performer who took over Kermit (and Sesame Street's Ernie) after Jim Henson's death. Interesting to note that Jim Henson died over 20 years ago; doesn't seem like it has been that long ...

Thanks for taking the time to do the live report. As usual, great pictures - that 7 second exposure on Illuminations is just pure sweetness!:thumbsup2

I used to get ear infections as a kid - here is hoping the antibiotics kick in quick! Have a great trip!

Thanks everyone! The good news is that the kids' race was a solid success; Jack started feeling better after getting up and going, and on the bus back to our resort, I asked him how he felt and he said "fine" - I asked about his ear and he said "it hurts a little..." so he's definitely better. He ran his tail off in the race! Leila did OK but mostly held Mommy's hand.

The bad news is that Mrs feels wretched and is going to stay in the room the rest of the day with Leila - who is full of energy. She's overdue for a nap so hopefully she'll conk out, and Jack and I will head to MK.

Really? Hmm. I always thought that Brian did it, since he should sound a bit like his father... well, whoever it is, it does sound better than it did in the early days after his death, IMHO.

I hope everyone gets to feeling better! DD and her boyfriend are down there this week and he has apparently gotten this stomach bug that has been going around here. We all had it last week, but he had to have gotten it at WDW. They're due to come home on Sunday.

They had ADR's at Le Cellier tonight and he couldn't eat very much. DD liked it a lot though and said the steak was better than the NY strip at Coral Reef which she had the other night and loved.

I haven't been to Coral Reef yet but Le Cellier is pretty great. Funnily enough, we haven't gone since skipping the dining plan the last few trips... :) (These bouts of sickness are a pretty good reason to skip it!)

Update to today: Jack and I went down to the AKV Kidani store and got some grocery-type things for Mrs and Leila, who were already asleep. On the way back to the room, Jack started dragging and decided that he didn't want to go if we couldn't bring the stroller - which I didn't want to in case Mrs needed it. So, I actually got him to fall asleep pretty easily, and since all three were asleep and I hadn't eaten yet, I hopped on a bus and went to MK and had lunch/dinner at Columbia Harbour House (yay!). I spent the rest of the time until MK closed wandering, taking pictures, and riding a very few rides. (HM, PotC, and Jungle Cruise.) At closing time, it was either stop back to our hotel and bring dinner, or hop on a monorail to Epcot, which was open until midnight. Mrs was work out from the kids rampaging through the room, so husbandly duties prevailed. I grabbed a bunch of goodies from Main St Bakery on the way out, then back to Mara at AKL again and yet again, walked to Kidani bringing hot dinner. By this time, it was getting late and I skipped potentially meeting a couple other Disboards folks (you know who you are!) Sorry I couldn't do it; at least two of us will likely meet up tomorrow morning at AK.

Now then, a few day 4 pics...

We had a pretty good day today. Mrs and Jack felt better this morning - certainly not 100% but not bad, especially with some medicine in them. We breakfasted on Main St cinnamon rolls with lots of extra glaze (thanks, cast member who loaded them up!) and spent the day in AK, "mopping up" the remaining things to do there. I never did get a chance to ride Dinosaur but Jack rode Everest twice, once with each parent, and we got to see not one, but too gorillas poop on Pangani Forest Trail! :rotfl2: I even got to meet, albeit briefly, Disboard's own Todd H. We were both with our families so didn't have time to chat for more than a couple minutes, but it was fun to meet another person from the boards.

We were "swept" out of Maharajah Jungle Trek as the park was closing (no pressure to leave, but every time we moved forward, a bigger and bigger group of cast members trailed behind us!) and made our way to MK. We got there just in time to find a pretty good spot to watch Main St Electrical Parade. I shot it with my LensBaby... which made for some crazy photos... and for some, I added the Summer Nightastic prismatic glasses we picked up in June. LensBaby + Nightastic glasses is total optical overload! The photographic equivalent of a pixy stick. Afterwards, we bought Leila her own set of embroidered mouse ears. I was a little disappointed that even the spot on Main St doesn't do it by hand any longer. We sort-of saw a little bit of Wishes then caught some dinner at Cosmic Rays, then Jack insisted on a Small World ride. Back to our hotel and that was the day!

Finishing off the day 4 sample pics...

Head-to-head sleeping in World of Disney!

This was a quick DR test. I've been shooting at ISO 80 a lot with the plan of recovering underexposed areas in post-processing. This shot had a lot of near-black originally. All I did was drag Fill Light to 49 and this was the result. Essentially noise-free and with ridiculous DR. Who needs HDR? :teeth:

Back to straight-from-the-camera. Like the last one, an AKL Kidani Village shot.

I glad to hear everyone is getting better! Nice shots with the K5. Continue having fun!!

Sorry we never ran into each other at MK on Friday Groucho! It sounds like we hit a few of the same things but I was a bit ahead of you. I got a late start due to luggage going to Atlanta instead of Orlando and then it hanging out with the courier for 13+ hours! Since I was heading to VB I kinda wanted to get it! Once I made it to MK I grabbed a FP for SM then had lunch at Columbia Harbor House. Road Jungle Cruise but skipped HM and POC since the lines were huge. Snuck in to COP and Mickey's Philharmagic after SM. Then used a FP for BTM which was my last ride of the day. Finally the Bakery around 7PM to get a Cinnamon Roll for beakfast the next day at VB although 1/2 of it ended up being a snack that evening after the drive since it looked so good!! :rotfl:

I'll be back at WDW the afternoon of the 12th but it looks like you're departing that day. I hope that everyone is feeling much better and that the rest of your trip is trouble free! You've had your share the last few trips it seems.
