Sunday morning, the 18th of January, dawned cold and grey at WDW. I mean really cold and grey. How cold and grey you ask? Well, all the cash registers in the Magic Kingdom gift shops had fleece hats and gloves prominently displayed next to them, the MK ice cream stands and cold drinks stands were pretty much all shuttered and the hot drinks emporia were doing a roaring trade as were the shops selling anything resembling longsleeved shirts, sweatshirts or jackets.
Having read the 10 day weather forecast prior to packing for DD and me, I was of course prepared - not. According to the forecasts it was supposed to be in the 60s and 70s. Darn those clipper systems from Canada.
DD had a warm coat but once in the park I bought her some mittens. It is a measure of how cold it was that she kept them on the entire visit.
Because we had promised DD another chance to see Mickey, we headed to MK. Before leaving AKL, I called Best Friend and arranged to meet them by the castle in an hour. BF grumbled that they would have to drive since they didn't know how to get to the MK. I suggested that they might want to use WDW transit options, but the idea of using a bus didn't thrill her (this from a person who commuted into New York City from NJ via bus for years). So off our intrepid little band went. We got to MK, rented a stroller for DD and started up Main Street. DSD thought it was very nice - nicer than she had thought it would be. At the castle we met up with BF and BFH. DH had already primed DD to want to ride the teacups with mommy (it's an old family tradition that I go on the teacups and whirl them silly). So we all started off in that direction. Suddenly a rest room across from a hot drink stand appeared and BF stopped. She turned to BFH and demanded that he get her a hot drink immediately. Then she disappeared into the rest room. We three adults decided the rest room sounded like a good idea too. But after we rendevoued back at the stroller, no BF or BFH. Finally after 10 minutes, I announced that I was taking my DD to the teacups and that was that. We walked right on. DH and DSD caught up a minute later to watch us twirling happily. DD loved it. DSD looked green and DH was content to take picture. DD also loved the mouse, which she insisted was a rat (we have several pet rats at home and she loves to pet them and insists most nights that they say good night to her - ever try to grab a happily roaming rat off a toddler's bed? It ain't easy is all I'll say.) The ride finished and we decided to go to ToonTown. I was dispatched to find BF and BFH to let them know. I found them slowly sipping hot beverages and huddling together. I told them where we were going and they joined us. DD, DH, DSD and I went on Goofy's Barnstormer and DD loved it. Then it was off to see Mickey's house (which my DH liked because the tv had a football game on) and Minnie's house which I thought was much nicer. Then it was on to see Mickey. The CM at the door of the judges' tent put up the rope between me and my DH and DD. I immediately informed her that my kid was in there and I was going in. She wasn't happy but let me through. BF and BFH tried the "I'm with her" but the CM was adement and wouldn't let them in. I caught up to DD just as she was meeting Mickey. It was very cute.
Outside, BF and BFH groused about the CM and the weather and then announced they were going back to their hotel. We said adieu and continued on, walking onto Haunted Mansion, BTRR and Splash Mountain. Well, DH and DSD did Splash - I stayed with DD who by this time was throwing a hissy fit. We fixed that by getting some fries on our way to Pirates. DH and DSD kindly let me obtain the fries. As I was walking over to them a large black bird swooped down, grabbed a couple of fries off the top and flew away. I was so astonished that I didn't do much except mutter, "Would you look at that." I did hear several people talking about it though. I didn't tell DH or DSD until after they had eaten the fries - the darn things were warm and my hands were cold. DSD, when we were planning the trip, said that the only thing she insisted on was to pay homage to PoC. OK force us to go on that ride. She had a blast. DH sang to the theme song and DD kept laughing every time a cannon ball went off.
By this time we were getting tired and DD had gotten over the fry fix, so we headed for the exit, stopping at Casey's for hotdogs. I enjoyed my bun, while DD who had said she didn't want anything chowed down on my hotdog - that's the last time I'll believe a toddler about a frank. We also wandered through Main Street Emporium, buying some warm clothes for DD. Then back to AKL for a rest. DSD went in the hot tub and loved it.
That evening we had PS for 9 Dragons at Epcot. I'd never eaten there and had heard mixed reviews, so it was with pleasure that we found out the food was very good. I had hot and sour soup, some of the best I've ever had, which I shared with DD - she likes odd things for a 2 year old. And then a tofu dish that was billed as hot, but was really rather mild. DD through a fit after she had finished eating so I took her out to her stroller and started walking her. After dinner, DH and DSD wanted to go back into the store, so I continued walking the DD and trying to get her interested in something, anything so she would stop crying. Finally a little masculine interest did the trick. I walked her up towards the shop and one of the CMs at the outside souvenir booth saw her and asked if she were adopted. I stopped to chat and he started talking to DD in Chinese. I caught the word "mei" which means beautiful in Chinese. DD brightened up immediately.
We strolled around the lagoon and managed to get DSD on Test Track, which she thought was really cool. It was that - I'm glad I bought us all gloves. We needed them.
Back at AKL, I made my daily call to Mousekeeping for towels. We decided that AK was on for the next day. DH and DSD went to Mara for sustenance and came back with drinks, snacks and a Stitch that immediately caused DD to demand one. So back went DH to the store and got DD her own Stitch. Not to mention a t-shirt for him and a Nemo for DSD. DD then wanted a Nemo and so DH went back again for a Nemo. And came back with another t-shirt for him as well. This from the man who said as we left home that he didn't have much he wanted to buy at WDW. What is it about men and stores?
