Another incident in WDW

and my husband and I noticed how many lifeguards there were. Over at the rock pool several were watching the water and 3 were watching just the slide. I don't think you should blame the GF. (Letting a 10 year old watch a 3 year old in a pool is outrageous!)

In the first article that was posted on this thread that was not stated. Did that just come out on the TV?

Did anyone notice that the word Disney didn't appear in the OP's linked article at all? It said "Orlando" and the Grand Floridian, but never Disney.

I just thought it was strange...

However according to the reports they were not there and left the boy to be watched by his 10 year old brother. In my eyes even letting your 10 year old in a pool by himself IS bad parenting.

I totally agree..... What the heck (I would rather use other words) were his parents thinking??

Back to the lifeguards...

I don't see that the lifeguards should have prevented the child from drowning in the kiddie pool. But why if there was all this commotion did a guest that took CPR training 20-30 years perform the CPR instead of the lifeguard? If Rosenhaus had time to go over to administer CPR, couldn't have the lifeguard gotten there too?

It appears as though the incident took place at night while the pool area was "closed." Thus, there are no on duty life guards. There are signs clearly posted at the pools that show what times the pools close and the life guards leave.

OK don't flame me here, but where were his PARENTS???? No mention of them...

:confused3 :confused3 they should really be with him!

When my cousins and I stay at the boardwalk villas, we (all the kids. ages 8,8,13,14,11) ask our parents if all of us could go down to the pool and we are a pretty big group ( there's about 5 of us) and we stick together, and my mom said no and these are exactly the reasons why! :sad2: ::yes::

I am glad the little boy is okay.

Did anyone see Drew Rosenhaus on the local Philly news last night? It was so funny, he said he hoped the Eagles see him as a caring person, not just a ruthless agent. :rotfl2:

I am a big Greenbay Packer fan and this caring person is singlehandedly tearing our team apart,I personally would like to throw him in a pool, any one want to help me? :rotfl:

The story in the Sentinel said that the child's mother was there when CPR was administered, but that she was hysterical and screaming. I'm guessing that she was probably in the pool area but not paying attention to what her children were actually doing until her attention was attracted by other people exclaiming over what was going on, at which point she probably went, "OMG, those are MY kids!" In my book, if your kids are in the water, then you have to be in the water, too; lying on a chaise longue reading is not sufficient supervision when water is involved. [Note that I'm not saying that she *was* reading, that's just by way of an example of how this sort of thing happens with a parent nearby.]

The story also said that there was a lifeguard on duty who was coming to help, but that Rosenhaus got to the child before the lifeguard did. Apparently there were many people gathered; it is possible that the lifeguard was trying to get through but his way was blocked.

I wish I knew how to post a quote...but since I don't I just want to say I have the same question as SNURK...why were the lifeguards not there to administer CPR? Anyway, I am not blaming them...I can't believe the parents would leave the kids alone. They were from another country, right? I hope they will not be able to sue...it will end up costing $1000 a night to stay at WDW in the future if everyone keeps up with this "sue happy" mentality!

In response to peter, I thought the incident took place at 4 in the afternoon. My DH saw the interview with Rosenhaus and he said that he is not usually sitting by a pool at 4 in the afternoon, so it was just a chance thing he was there.

This story really hits home. My 2yr old fell in the deep end of my inlaws pool last week. We were all (7 adults, & her 3 older cousins) outside & next to the pool ,but noone was in it. Needless to write, DH & I had an adrenaline rush/fear of god panic attack, DH dove into the pool & I ran at Mach speed to the deep end, took seconds to reach her, but the longest seconds of my life. She was fine, we were soaked, our hearts racing like we were on the verge of cardiac arrest;I am still devastated (though remind myself it could've been much worse). Our new rule: Noone NEAR the pool unless an adult is IN IT. We thought she was fine walking by the pool w/ her cousins (1 of whom was as old as the older brother that was w/ this boy - even he panicked & never could've helped her out; I was being paranoid, & watching like the kids like a hawk, turned my gaze for one second & heard a light splash & she was under water). You can never be too careful, I can acknowledge first hand how quickly a tragedy can happen, we just barely heard her fall in. I'm so glad this poor little boy is ok, & that the man who resued him was there to help. I'm not going to pass judgement on the parents, despite my recent brush w/ complete devastation (I wholeheartedly would've blamed myself had we not gotten to her), hopefully this little boys incident will serve as a reminder to all of us, water is dangerous, esp for the little ones, they should be supervised at all times while in or NEAR the water. Parents have no excuse not to.

I think you need to be an NFL fan to appreciate why I'm laughing about the shark reference, but that article hits it on the head!

Bob

The news tonight on Channel 7 in DC said this time it was a "shark saving somebody".

You would think WDW --with their commitment to safety on rides... would employ some extra CM's to lifeguard the pools. Ultimately the responsibility rests with the parents. But like many others say "kids are so quick".
We are going in Oct. with our son(2) for his 1st WDW trip and we are getting nervous. We always remember seeing other parents walking around the parks with those "kid leashes"or whatever they are called. And thought"Wow do they really need their kids on a tether??!!" Now the shoes are on our feet!!We are considering getting one 'cause he is fast!!Wish us luck!

I didn't see it posted.

A boy nearly drowns at the GF pool if not for an NFL agent.

Not too be picky, but when I first read the sentence I read it as...

If it weren't for the NFL agent the boy would have nearly drown.

I think it is because of the NFL agent that the boy nearly drowned - without the agent the boy would have really drown.

Eagles fans here, so you don't even mention THAT guy's name in this house!!

My first reaction was...."Can you get a 4 yr old to play-act a near drowning?" That agent is the biggest self-promoter that ever walked the face of the earth. I wouldn't put it past him to stage the whole thing! I'm sure that my dislike for this guy is fueling my skepticism. Really, I'm glad the little boy is OK........just wish a less egotistical person could have saved him.

Only if the pool is filled with...........................what else? SHARKS! :rotfl2:

Maybe the agent was keeping the lifeguard and everybody else away so he could take all the credit ;)

There was a quote from a Deputy Sheriff (if I remember correctly) to the effect that yeah he saved the kid and is making sure that everybody knows it :teeth:

OH MY GOD!!!! It sounds like it's a bad time to go to DisneyWorld right now. I can't believe all these tragedies are happening.

I'm starting to really consider canceling our trip in December. I can't imagine taking my 20-month old to a place so dangerous!!!

And THEN, when you factor in the number of people killed on the road each year, getting to DisneyWorld will be even more of a daunting task.

And we're only halfway through Hurricane season, so DisneyWorld might not even exist in December.

I think I better call and cancel right now. I don't know if I can go to a place that's so unsafe.

/sarcasm off

Ahh, gotta love sensationalism!!!

While we were in San Antonio this past week, a man suffered a heart attack on the RiverWalk. Checked the papers the next day and nothing about it.

People, let's put things in perspective...MILLIONS of PEOPLE visit DisneyWorld every year. There were more people struck by lightning last year than died in DisneyWorld. There are more people that die in Wal-Mart per year than DisneyWorld, and the rides at Wal-Mart are tame.

Just to share....we have one of those soft side simple set pools. It only comes to my DS(5) waist.

The news yesterday from Global (Toronto National Station) stated that a 13 year girl from a small town north of Montreal drowned in one of these pools. She had long hair and it got in the filter and held her underwater.
She was kicking and her cousin thought she was playing. Her brother cut her hair with a knife but she later died at the hospital. Apparently these pools don't have the same set up as "permament pools" The filter doesn't have a flap and has a very strong suction. I just wanted to bring this to the attention of any DISer's with these pools. Turn off the filter while the kids are swimming and watch them closely!

God Bless that sweet little boy.............Teresa :flower:
