Another holding question

Finding myself in an unfamiliar situation, looking for some confirmation on my thinking.

We have a quick 2 night trip in early December that was booked after the 7 month mark. We also have a long trip in January that was partially booked after the 7 month mark. If we have to cancel the December trip last minute (flight woes) can I just go in and reallocate those holding points to the reservation I have in January? Is it that easy?

TIA!

I believe that is correct

Yes.. the system will pick them up since you are within 60 days under a few conditions.

If that October trip was made during home resort priority, the holding points need to be from that resort.

If it was made 7 months or less, then any points will do!

Also, it assumes the points are all in the same membership.

Just go in, modify, don’t change a thing and book it again and it will take the holding points.

^That answer was from a similar question back in 2022

I’m not 100% sure but you might need to cancel December reservation, then modify the Jan reservation to take those holding points?

That’s what I would do, cancel December then modify January. I’ve never had points in holding before so this is new. Than for the info!

Yes, you would need to cancel the December trip before you can use the points in that trip to do a modification of the Jan trip to change the points being used. Things to be aware of are:

1. The cancellation of the December reservation and modification of the January reservation must be completed by at least 31-days before the start of the Jan reservation. If it were done 30-days or fewer before the start of the Jan reservation, then all you would be doing is putting holding points from the Dec reservation into the Jan reservation and taking out an equal number of regular points from the Jan reservation which would then go into holding.

2. The desired exchange can be made only if the points on both reservations are from the same membership. If you have two memberships, which would be the case if you have two different starting months for the use years, points from one membership cannot be exchanged for points in the other membership. In that case, you would need to cancel the Dec reservation and then transfer the holding points to the membership that has the Jan reservation before you can use them to modify the Jan reservation.

3. As long as the Jan reservation was made during the 7-month window, the points to be exchanged from the Dec reservation need not be for the same DVC Resort as those already in the Jan reservation. If the Jan reservation was made during the 11-month window, then the exchange is possible only if the points in the Dec reservation belong to the same resort as the one reserved in the Jan reservation. This may be an issue for you since you mention that the Jan reservation was only "partially" made in the 7-month window.

Thank you for this. These are points from the same membership, although different contracts and both reservations were made after 7 months. Luckily the reservation I want to swap points on is at the end of our January trip (split stay) so I’m at 45 days worst case scenario. All helpful advice!

Excellent points! Glad someone is around to help with these finer details.
