I remember reading once that if you have your hair cut/styled by the salon owner than you don't have to tip. Well, the woman who has been doing my hair for years has now opened her own shop. As I mentioned in a previous post (here you go0 my latest cut cost me $50, which is more than I have paid in the past.

I looked at a site with salon etiquitte info and they did say that tipping the salon owner if they are your stylist is not neccessary, but I wanted to see what you thought.

Did you/would you tip?

For the record I did give her a tip when she cut my hair yesterday.

I have in the past. Our stylist was a friend of the family. We always gave her a tip.

Your info is correct. The majority of my clients still tip but not all. And yes, I report them. :)

Gee, I never knew that! I always give my hairstylist at least a 15% tip, if not more! Well, I can't change now or she'll never forgive me. ;)

My stylist is the owner of the salon and I do tip her. I just wouldnt feel right not tipping.

I bever tipped the owner. I do tip a hairstyleist that works for him, I have her do my hair now. Only 19 dollars to just cut verses 28 just cut, both no blow dry. She cuts my hair so much better:D

My former stylist owned the salon and I did not tip him, but I did tip his assistants. I have been going to him for nearly 10 years now (and driving 25 miles each way to go see him), but he has become so bad at being on time that I now go to one of his former assistants (in the same salon and now a stylist). I LOVE her and I do definitely tip her. :)

Etiquette does dictate you don't tip the owner of a salon. I have never gone to the owner, but if I did, I would not tip. Trust me, between the percentage of the products they sell, and what they charge the other stylists to use their chair, combined with the full percentage of the services they give you, they are making good money.

I've had the same girl cut my hair for probably 20 years. She's my age and she worked in a salon near my home when I met her. I always tipped her there. When she and a coworker opened their own salon down the street, I then went to her there. It felt weird to not tip her at the new place when I did at the old just because she became the co-owner. So I still tip her about 15%. She charges $22 for a cut/blow dry and $53 for a perm (including cut), so I don't think her prices are high compared to what others have posted here. I also tip the shampoo girl $1 or $2.

Gee, I wish I had read this thread before going to a new salon. The owner cuts/colors my hair & I tip her 15 to 20%! YIKES! Last time, she handed me some tip money back! Too late now though that I've started tipping. She'll think I'm not happy with my hair anymore if I stopped tipping!
