I was just on the Disney Dining site and saw this for Aloha Isle.

Refresh with soft-serve ice cream with a tropical twist.

If you haven't figured it out yet, they do not serve ice cream here.

If Dole sold Dole Whip at a supermarket and called it ice cream the FDA would slap a cess and desist order on them.

Dole Whip doesn't even come close to the FDA's definition of ice cream.

I bring this up because us Lactose Intolerant people need to stick together.

So you don't think Dairy Queen is considered an ice cream treat?

Sorry I think it's more of your defination than error.

Dairy Queen does not sell nor do they advertise that they sell Ice Cream they sell DQ soft serve. Legally they can't all it Ice Cream.

For years ice cream had a very strict definition of having a certain percentage of milk fat. Any thing else was either soft serve or something they had to call Ice Milk. Now Ice Milk can be called low fat ice cream.

Dole Whips do not have any milk or cream in them at all and can't even remotely be called ice cream. They only contain a milk derivative the same ingredient as non dairy creamer.

The main reason I am bringing this up is I went to WDW a couple of times and avoided Dole Whips because of being Lactose Intolerant. Since I found out that they are completely Lactose free I and many others can eat them and not worry about "Tummy troubles".

So its more than just a definition. Its an Unlawful use of the word ice cream. It would be the same as if Casey's said their Hot Dogs are all beef.

Technically they do serve ice cream there. You can order a Dole whip float, which is half ice cream and half Dole whip. I had one on my last trip.

Disney does not say that a Dole Whip is ice cream. They say you can enjoy an ice cream treat at Aloha Isle with a tropical twist (you can get a pineapple spear or juice or mix your ice cream with dole whip for a pineapple/vanilla twist).

They do serve ice cream there - my kids get it because they prefer it over the dole whip. Disney's website does not say anything untrue.

A float is Dole whip and pineapple juice.

Dole Whip is not just pineapple. They have 9 or so flavors, including orange and vanilla.

If you look at this pic you can see its all flavors of Dole Whip no ice cream of any type.

Maybe I was too harsh with the Fail reference, but like I said, there is no ice cream served at this location.

. It would be the same as Casey's saying their Hot Dogs are all beef.

But Caseys DOES sell Hot Dogs. And they call them Hot Dogs if they are all beef, or pork or chicken mix, they are hot dogs.
It's what people commonly think of and refer it to.

That's all I'm saying. Same with A Dole Whip. It's the common way people think of describing it. A soft serve ice cream treat.

I'm sure Disney just trying to let people know what a Dole Whip is in terms the most people will understand.

If we have to refer to technical and official terms for everything the world would be way to politically correct.
It's be like banning saying "Q-Tip" or "Band Aid" just because it's a generic brand. You know what they mean.

So when they call it "soft-serve ice cream" you know what they mean even if and especially if your Lactose Intolerant.

Sorry my Casey comment should have said "if" they called them all beef.

As for what they call it. There is nothing PC about it. The website is saying something unlawful. Its not ice cream and can not be called ice cream.

And if they call it "soft-serve ice cream" they mean its has milk products in it and if you are Lactose Intolerant should avoid it.

How does this help me by calling it soft serve ice cream? :confused3

Well call me stupid cause I haven't figured it out yet, but what the heck is a Dole Whip & the Float if it isn't ice cream? What have I been eating all these years? :confused3

A Dole Whip Float is Dole Whip Soft Serve in either Pineapple juice, Coke or Root Beer.

You can get any of the three flavors of Dole Whip they have in the pineapple juice.

For Coke and Root Beer they only use the vanilla flavor of Dole whip.

Pineapple or Orange in Coke, I can't find a smiley to fit that combo. :goodvibes

Ok, so let me get this right...

You are mad b/c even though YOU have eaten there a few times and enjoyed the "soft serve", others MAY have been avoiding it b/c of the label the Disney website uses to describe the product? By them using the term, "ice cream treat", they are somehow breaking the law?

Are you serious?

:scared1: Whoa...
don't make it "personal" ! :sad2: Fight nice children :rotfl2: (LOL !)
IMHO, the "discussion" has more to do with "lactose intolerance", and what people with the aforementioned affliction can, and cannot, ingest, without causing significant distressful ramifications.... :guilty:  :headache:
Translation: dairy products out (including, but not limited to, milk and ice cream) / fruit and non-dairy products, in.... :wizard:

Not mad but I thought it was a little strange that the people that do the website don't know what they serve at this establishment.

I have responded to many threads here when people ask about Lactose free eating at WDW and are surprised and thankful that they can eat Dole Whip. I'm not saying that Aloha Isle should put a big "We are Lactose free" sign up, but the website should not say its ice cream.

And yes there are many regulations concerning what can be called Ice Cream. While writing in this thread I looked up the FDA's regulations defining of ice cream and its a lot 'no more than this', 'no less than this', type standard government speak. So thats why Dairy Queen calls what it sell DQ soft serve and not ice cream, they are not allowed to by regulation.

Just find the "comments" section on the website and send them an email if you are worried that their description of Aloha Isle will confuse lactose-intolerant guests.

I don't think it's strange at all. I wouldn't be surprised if the employees who work on the website has never actually been to the establishments. I wouldn't be surprised if they aren't actually in Florida. And we're pretty aware on this board of how often the Disney website gets things wrong.

Maybe you can find a large group of lactose intolerant people who are mad about the verbage Disney used on the website and you can sue them and demand they stop using the word ice cream.

Yes I'm not attacking the beloved Dole Whip. I'm not using the term beloved sarcastically at all. I love that I can have a frozen treat at WDW, in fact I have the mix at home right now (not the same without the soft serve machine).

I'm just pointing out that using the term Ice Cream in a Disney Published website seemed odd, when as a business they need to be careful how they word things.

Done

So if they wrote, dole whip soft serve that somehow indicates lactose free?? I though lactose free was something you found out by reading the ingredients.

Yes i get it. The lactose free was brought up later.

My point was that they should not call it ice cream because its not.

As soon as they call it ice cream there is no reason to read the ingredients. Because ice cream is ice cream not soft serve frozen confection or other words manufactures have to use, by law, when its not ice cream.
