In other news today I read record number of guns are being confiscated at TSA screenings.

As someone who will be boarding a plane with my family this weekend this always makes me wary.

The USA is pretty much only paralleled by Brazil when it comes to routine violence... could be wrong though. I pray I am!

ok so, while I do agree that gun violence is a problem, the US is nowhere near the most violent country in the world.

it doesn't make me wary but I find it incredibly strange that people know we all are restricted on something like liquids in carry ons but peeps think you can bring your firearm?? It's more like a short-sighted thought and how did you come to that conclusion it was okay thing.

Guns however are something that the TSA had a big PR mess a long while back when a limited study was conducted and found they missed just about all. I'm sure they are trying to be better and better at that knowing many people saw those findings.

Oh, I fully agree. I mean, there are many less violent countries, but there are tonnes of more violent countries too. I misrepresented that in my previous post. I apologise.

I hate feeling afraid in my own country. I find myself second guessing plans I have, places I'd like to visit in the US, etc.

We spent 10 days last summer traveling through Ottawa, Montreal and Quebec City. There were street fairs, musical festivals, parades and crowds everywhere. I never once thought about gun violence. That of course is not to say that it couldn't happen--it just wasn't front and center on my mind. It was such a relief.

I just flew into Los Angeles last night from a wonderful week in snowy, beautiful Ottawa, Canada. I checked my Twitter news each day I was away. There was either a mass or major shooting every day last week somewhere in this country. Most don;t even make the news anymore. My Canadian colleagues said they are in constant disbelief about our gun violence. Seeking a sponsor in Canada for retirement!

I breathe such a sign of relief the minute I step on Canadian soil.

I guess we have one small reprieve - we're not in Ukraine, under constant threat of invasion, bombarded by missiles by a raving madman, or perhaps a citizen of Russia, where wave after wave of young men are being conscripted as their regular army is being picked dry by the very country they are meant to be placating...

Unfortunately we don't give a hoot about the routine violence itself. We just slap them on the wrist and send them back out to do it again.

We're no saints either when it comes to crime and punishment. Don't get me wrong, I am a total pacifist and abhor state sanctioned killing, but if a scumbag rapes and kills an 11yo girl, he should be locked up FOR LIFE, as in FOR LIFE. Instead, over here, you are sentenced to life, which equates to 20 to 30 years, or early if you're a good boy. Agreeable, the most serious cases get multiple life sentences stacking up, but I still feel out penal system is waaaay too soft.

Good guy with a gun is totally a thing. My brother, who works all hours in an on-call job in some bad places, has twice been "the good guy" and has stopped violence because he's prepared.
