Another Curves question

I just found out there's a Curves a few blocks from my house.

I just called and was told that the membership fee is $49.00 until Wednesday. The lady told me that they do not have a set membership fee, it changes often.

I'm going to walk up there later to check it out. What I want to know is if $49 is a good rate to pay for the membership or should I wait for a better price.

I live in Ontario and I paid about $69 initiation fee. So I don't think $49 sounds too bad. The thing that I hate is the sales pitch "this price is only good until xxx" When I joined, I was told that I could only have that price if I signed up that day. I told them I thought that was garbage ... why should I commit to something without trying it out first (I knew that many had been given a free trial week). She extended the offer for a week. I hate these "slimy sales techniques" that coerce someone into committing to something right away. Yes, it's called "sales", I know, but I still hate it !

I would tell them that you are very interested, but want to try it for a week, AND you want the special rate on initiation fee. I'll bet they'll go for it 'cause of course they want your business in the end.

CURVES are franchises, so you will see a difference in rates/sign up fees. If that particular location is important to you (sounds very convenient) you'll need to try for the best deal you can get. I figure many locations might night be doing 'special' rates right now, as this is the time of year most people jump on the exercise bandwagon (New Year's resolutions and all).

The hours of operation may vary some also. The newest CURVES by me didn't have Saturday hours until they had been open for a few months. So if you live where there are several locations in your area, you might want to visit each one. I was told at mine that if I joined the "east" side one, I could still get in the "west" side one...BUT I'd be sure that that was the case where you are.

I think $49 is a fair price. I paid $74.50 for the membership and it's $29 per month (from my VISA debit card). We were given a week free to see if we liked it and once we joined up they also gave us the first to months free (they were having a promotion at that time). So, I ve going since the end of November, and they haven't taken the $29 from my debit card yet! I will pay the first monthly fee next week.

I have been going now for two months and I really like it.

ibouncetoo is right. Curves are franchises, so you will find different prices.

The one I go to is celebrating it's first year. We have specials going on all week. I think it is $59.00 to join and then 29.00 a month if you let them do an electronic transfer from your bank account. That is what I do because it was less expensive.

I have been going since March '03 and love it when I can get there.
