Another Co-Worker Rant...

Could have been worse. She could have pawed through all of them picking out her favorites ... after one of her potty breaks .

I think you should do something nice. Make some special cookies, wrap them up in pretty cellophane with a bow and make a point of giving them as gifts only to co-workers you *like*.

Then when Miss Greedy LePig comes snuffling around, you can say that she already got her present.

I've already decided that's what I'm doing next year. I'll bring her a plate, althuogh hopefully she's gone by then.

MY boss (who works in the field three states away, everyone else in this office reports to the CFO) got a delivery of steaks this morning, she was actually getting ready to open the styrofoam shipping container when I caught her. I took it into my office and sent him an e-mail asking what to do about them. I can't beleive she was getting ready to open a box addressed to MY boss! Everyone here knows all his mail is not to be opened by anyone but me. Why would that be any different?

I used to have a co-worker that was a total pig. One Christmas our department received a huge box of candy from a vendor. There were 3 of us that worked nights. Myself, another lady and this guy. I had 1 piece, the other lady had 2 and by the morning the box was gone. It had come late in the afternoon so no one else had gotten any. This guy had eaten 45 pieces of candy. We counted how many were in the box and since the 2 of us only ate 3 pieces he ate the rest. I told the manager in the morning what happened. The guy was skinny and I didn't want her thinking the fat girls ate all the candy.

I have found that NOT to be true in my neck of the woods. I used to work in a place that would order pizzas for staff during busy periods. They would order enough for everyone to have about 2 slices. The first few people to eat wouldn't think about the rest of the staff that needed to eat, they would just eat as much as they wanted (5-7 slices each). The people who were the last to eat didn't get any pizza and had to buy their own lunches.

I've also noticed the same thing when appetizers are ordered. If their are 6 pieces of something and 7 people, no one splits one of the pieces. The first 6 get one and the other person is out of luck.

Then you've got those people that hover over the food like hawks. They need to make sure that they get the first piece (and always the largest) of something.

OK, I'm off my soapbox now.

Remember those steaks? Well, my boss didn't want them. He told me to take them home. I split them up and gave half to a terrific co-worker who I know lives on a pretty tight budget (trying to save for a house) and I knew would REALLY enjoy them. His eyes LIT UP when I handed the box to him.

I'm looking forward to playing with the dry ice in a little while. I know, some people's kids.

Can't wait until the piggy co-worker realizes they aren't in the office fridge anymore. I bet she was planning out her Christmas dinner with them.

Our manager got a catered lunch for a meeting a few months back... trays & trays of ziti, lasagna, salad, bread sticks you name it... there was a ton leftover (I mean ALOT), we stuck the trays in the fridge for lunch the next day.. next day came & it was ALL GONE... we work in a large office with an outside cleaning crew so it could have been anybody but my god that food could have fed a family for weeks!

I guess I look at it differently. They are just cookies and you did take them to share. Yes, it was to share with co-workers, but it's Christmas, a time of sharing and a time of FORGIVING. Obviously, she thought they were so good that she wanted to take them home and share with her grandkids. So you did her grandkids a good deed by baking for them too, because somehow I doubt she did. Be happy everyone enjoyed them, which is what you really intended, and count it as a blessing that they were enjoyed by others you didn't intend.

Where I work, nothing stays over the weekend. Food = bugs and mice, so we clear out everything that can't go in the refrigerator.

I just can't look at it that way. If she had ASKED if she could take a few home for the grands, I would have been flattered and of course said yes. It was the sneaky way she did it, and then the LIE she told me TO MY FACE that burns me. Not to mention that she took three pounds of cookies. Her grands didn't need three pounds of cookies.

If I wanted to give them away to "strangers" I would rather have taken them to where they feed the homeless downtown--which I will be doing next weekend. This is not the first time this same co-worker has pulled a stunt like this.

They were wrapped up tightly, and would have been fine on the counter.

That reminds me of one Christmas Eve at our house.. Up until a couple of years ago I would bake for a week straight - all day every day and into the night.. Thousands of cookies and probably close to 100 assorted miniature breads..

We would have a big party on Christmas Eve with at least 35 people in attendance.. People were free to take home goodies as they were leaving.. Well my late brother's wife decided they were going to leave very early in the evening.. I was in the kitchen (the goodies were set up on tables in the living room) and she came in to ask me if they could take some of them home.. I said, "Sure - everyone is invited to take home some of the cookies and a few of their favorite breads.."

I was distracted for a few minutes and they left without saying goodbye.. Imagine my surprise when I walked in the living room and everything was gone!!!!!!! Not ONE cookie or bread was left!!

I was livid!! From that point on, I packaged things up ahead of time and offered them to people as they left..

Some people have NO class at all..

One of the bank branches I worked at had a lunch thief too. I just can't imagine eating a lunch you didn't bring.


At another branch we had a vending company who brought in a small snack box once a week. It had maybe 50 or so snacks in it and you were supposed to put your money in the little box, basically the honor system since it wasn't a machine. Anyhow, they quit service to our branch because they had gotten shorted several weeks in a row. It could have only been an employee because we were the only ones with access to it.

Christmas Eve at my grandma's house really bugs me though. Each family is supposed to bring something. You don't have to make it, you can bring some chips or crackers or a pre-made dish. There is one aunt who never brings anything and a handful of cousins who also never bring anything.

Sometime after dinner and after the gifts have been opened, 3 of my aunts will go clean the kitchen. But first they go get their empty cool whip bowls, butter bowls, Reynolds Wrap, etc that they've brought from home and divide up all the leftovers for themselves! Just once I'd like to say "Hey, who said you could take all my leftover cookies, pie, brownies, whatever I brought, home with you?"

I think the first part is very polyanna, but the second part is legitimage. If I saw a tray of cookies on the counter at 5pm on Friday, I'd figure they were fair game. Who wants stale old cookies on Monday?

Ducklite, I feel for you. NO ONE should take home food (or other items) from the workplace without an invitation to do so. I would think this "rule" would be so basic as to be known and understood by all. And, for those who question the state of the cookies come Monday, most cookies would keep just fine wrapped up for the week-end, ready to be enjoyed the next week.

As for those steaks, I would think that had she gone far enough (actually opened the box), it should have been a firing offense!

Oh I would be furious too. If you want to give the benefit of the doubt about not wanting them to sit over the weekend, fine. But then she lied about taking them, so there goes any benefit of the doubt.

We recently had someone get fired for food stealing. The final straw was this person actually stole a sheet cake that was in the fridge for a party later that day. Now that took nerve. Who steals a sheet cake?

Everywhere I've worked this has been an issue, that's why I use my insulated bag with an ice pack.

This must be more of a universal problem than I thought. Our office is half Asian and half Americans. The Asian half never wants to bring anything or if they do, nothing that is edible. Our boss decided that he wanted to have a Christmas party in the office or as the Americans put it, we bring food for them to eat. It is so divided in our office that all of the Asians sit on one side of the office and the Americans sit on the other. Plus the Asians all have giant flat screen computer monitors while we have old dinosaur computers that barely work. It is ridiculous! I was off today so one of the girls in the office called to remind me about the party tomorrow and it was don't forget to bring food for them. They all bring their husbands in to eat also and they don't care if everyone who has brought food has gotten to eat yet or not. Tomorrow should be interesting.

There is no way that I would put my lunch in the fridge either because you can't count on it being there when you are ready to eat.

It's not over! Miss Piggy just noticed the steaks were no longer in the fridge. She went ballistic saying she was going to bring in her hibachi so we could grill them up for lunch this week, and now "SOMEONE STOLE THEM!"

I walked over to her and told her that they had been sent to ******* (my boss) not the office--and that he had asked me to take care of them for him. (I left it at that.) I said it in a very curt tone, and then just walked away.

The good co-worker was in her office wiping tears off her face she was laughing so hysterically.

What is with this woman?!?!?!
