Another challenge to travel

Yes, I think domestic travel demand is surging.

We have tickets to USVI (direct from Houston) for early June and the plane is already quite full. Also, my parents booked their hotel a few weeks later than I did and the room rate (for the exact same room type) had increased over 25%.

We’re in Morocco now. We ended up canceling our Air France flight (and got 50% of the total price back.) We booked a Royal Air Maroc flight that flies directly to JFK from Morocco landing at 6:30pm. We’ll have to get a hotel room at JFK and then fly out at 6:00am the next morning. I’m hoping we don’t run into any “you must quarantine” issues since we’ll have just been tested and are leaving the state 12 hours later. That was the best we could find that didn’t involve switching airports or spending the night in an airport in Europe somewhere. It was surprisingly easy to cancel our Air France flight.

Morocco is fantastic. It’s nice not being so crowded but the trade off is there is an 8pm curfew so dinner is early and choices are limited as most restaurants are closed. I miss having drinks at a late night cafe and people watching. My husband was in bed by 8:30. We are in a huge hotel tonight and there are a total of 7 guests. It’s kind of creepy in a way. Our hotel tomorrow was canceled because we were the only two rooms booked out of 100. Our tour company arranged a back up so we found out about it after the arrangements were made. If we were doing this all DIY it would be more stressful. Several tourist spots have been closed. The locals have been wonderful and seem genuinely thrilled that we are here.

We met a Spanish family last night who found out on 24hrs notice they can not fly home. I believe they were going to travel to tangier and take the ferry.

Being able to travel has been great, but it’s definitely a different experience than usual. Lots more uncertainty that is out of your control.

I keep waiting for our one flight this year to fill up... there are still only 14 of us on our flights to Hawaii. Hopefully we aren't bumped to a different flight.

Interesting. Maybe my flight is just full bc it's the only direct Houston to USVI flight that day.

Hopefully your flight will stay put!

You must live in the one area where people are not going to Hawaii - LOL. I keep reading about airlines adding flights there, tourism visitors being up, and rental car pricing out of control with pricing of several hundred dollars per day due to lack of cars available.

Yeah, I saw that over on the Aulani board earlier today. The article explains that part of the problem is they sold off their rental cars and weren't expecting any tourists to come back for awhile yet... nor can they buy cars as supplies are thin due to a shortage of chips to put in new ones. Even a little demand was enough to put them over the edge..! Usually flights to the islands go full from my city (Portland) but everyone here has been taking things VERY seriously, so it could just be most of our population flat out isn't ready to travel quite yet.
