I was trying to find somewhere within reasonable driving distance for DS and I to go to for 2 or 3 days in late July while I have a week of vacation. I was reading the other Cedar Point thread and took a look at the web site and I'd really like to go. DS is 6, but he's 50 inches tall and LOVES coasters (he was finally tall enough for RnR on our February trip to WDW and we went on 4 times in a row.........) I was wondering about accomodations??? I think we'd have to stay 3 nights....it's a 6 hour drive and I'd have to rest the 1st night, do as much of Cedar Point as we can one day, and then I thought we'd try Soak City for the next day, get a good nights sleep, and then drive back to Wisconsin. Are there any nice hotels other than the resorts listed on the Cedar Point site??? I don't think my budget could handle those resorts + tickets, food, gas and parking. I looked on Expedia, and there are quite a few within my budget, but I'm not sure if there are any that I should avoid?? Any good or bad experiences???

TIA
Jaimee

We stayed at the Great Bear Lodge--I think they call it the Great Wolf Lodge now. It wasn't cheap but it had an indoor waterpark. It's somewhat of the same decor as the Wilderness Lodge--but not quite as nice.

All of the lodging in the area seems kind of pricey to me.

Did you check out the "Special packages" area of the Cedar Point website? We usually go once a year and use one of their deals for the Breakers hotel. For around $350 you get the room, 2 full day admissions, 2 starlight admissions, 4 B1G1 for Soak City,2 free golf or gocart tickets and $30 in munch money for the on site resturant. We love the Breakers because you can just stroll over to the rides and the beach is right out the door too. Check it out if you haven't already!

We drive from NJ (about an 8 hour drive). We have stayed at Breakers Express. Its still on Cedar Point Property, but you need to drive on the causeway and park fee.

However, the room rate is substantially lower than others.

We went last year for Riddlecon. The main road leading in to Cedar Point has every chain motel there is. So, if you like a particular one - Hampton Inn, Days Inn, whatever - search for the closest one in Sandusky. We stayed in the Days Inn. It was clean and just a regular Days Inn. (We had tremendous storms when we were there and the roof leaked in our room so I can't really recommend that room.)

I got the microtel inn for $35 a night on Priceline. It was about a 10 min drive to the park.

Agree with Breezy_Carol that there are a lot of hotels on the causeway, which is the closest to Cedar Point.

Three years ago, we stayed around Port Clinton at a Holiday Inn Express. It was pretty new and we had no complaints. The location would be a farther drive to Cedar Point, but we went to see other attractions in the area.

give www.sanduskyhotels.com a look. I've personally stayed or visted Dusk to dawn, Clarton, travelodge, rhodeway inn. and days inn.

FYI Milan rd ( rt 250) is main drag.
There is a Meijers and a walmart plus lots of nice places to eat on this road not far from CP causeway.

For all the hotels in the area, I think the Breakers Express is the best buget hotel there. The rooms are a lot cleaner and nicer than nearly any other budget place in Sandusky. I know a friend who stayed at the Microtel that was mentioned and he liked it. I stayed at a Rodeway Inn near the causeway. It had an indoor pool, but the rooms were kind of old.

If you can swing it, stay onsite. It is so nice to be able to walk back to the hotel for a swim, etc. You also get early entry to the park which is a big plus if you are going on the mega coasters which quickly accumulate a 2 hour wait.

We stayed at Hotel Breakers and it was very nice and convenient.

There's a Fast Pass-like system called Freeway. Bascially, you get your hand stamped for a 1 hour time window to return. I believe it's available on Millenium Force, Raptor, Mantis, and Wicked Twister. Top Thrill Dragster has a stand, but I don't know if they've been using it lately.

DH and I stayed at the Radisson when we went 3 years ago. It's a little past the causeway but was very big and had good rates if I remember.

I think the Raddisson is getting changed over to the indoor water park/hotel complex that is being built. Some Radison signs were gone, and some weren't.

Barry ~ is there a charge for this "freeway" Could you give me more details. I'm tryng to plan a trip for this spring and after Universal's FOTL the family's a bit spoiled.

I think I've narrowed it down to "Hotel Breakers" since it's so convenient to the parks..........do they honor any discounts like AAA or Entertainment card?

No they do not offer any AAA or Entertainment discounts! We tried to get the discounts last year and were told, "due to limited seasonal requirements, we offer no discounts other than the discount after Aug. 24th"! We stayed in a Snoopy Room that really wasn't that nice and the windows faced ugly fire escapes, and alley way and other windows! I was extremely disappointed with the hotel, but would still stay there for convenience alone!!!

PS. Inside Cedar Point was a great buffet restaurant called The Market!

You may do better rate wise with Breakers Express. It is a newer hotel, but you do have to drive to Cedar

There's no charge for Freeway. You just need a free hand. :)

As for a hotel, I've stayed at the Breakers. In some ways, the Breakers Express is a little better, but it doesn't have the convience of walking back to your hotel at the Breakers.
