Another Building Question...Bonus Rooms

Our plan calls for a bonus room, that we have elected to have partly unfinished to save about $25,000!

It will be studded up, have elec., plumbing, air, etc..all run, we will just have to sheetrock it, do flooring,etc..

My question is this though, IF the builder was going to finish the room he was going to put in a window, which it WILL NOT have if we go the unfinished route. Unless we pay extra of course.

At first I thought, we'll we'd just pay the extra for the window, but then I started thinking...HOME THEATER!

I thought maybe it would be cool to make it a movie room, because we're always trying to hang blankets and stuff over the windows when we watch movies in the daytime.

I don't know, am I just grasping here??

Unless it's in the basement I don't think I'd like a room w/o windows. We have room darkening shades that really work so movie watching during the day has never been an issue. Where in the house would the room be? Could you use it for other things? We don't watch movies enough to warrant an entire room dedicated to that but I'm sure lots of people would love it.

It's upstairs, over the garage.

I never thought about room darkening shades..DUH! Shows how much I know!

We have a bonus room over our garage. It has 2 windows in it. It started out as a toy room, morphed into a tv room, and is now my office.

I would probably think about putting a window in for resale purposes. You could always put room-darkening shades or curtains on it if you wanted to use it for watching movies. However, if you're pretty sure that you're going to be there for awhile and that's the only use that you and your husband have planned for the space, then go for it!!

We do have a windowless media room in our basement and we LOVE it. Best place in the house to watch tv!!

Home theater bonus rooms are becoming very popular and I wouldn't worry about it being a resale problem. If fact, if you do it right, a home theater room could be a very big selling point.

Before the room is finished...

Run speaker wires to the front center, back center, and four corners of the room.

Be sure to have two outlets in the front of the room that run on different circuits.

Set up the room for wall mounted lighting that all run to one dimmer switch.

Put in sound dampening insulation so the room next door will not be bothered by the subwoofer of a good home theater.
